Self defense against dog

Ex Letter Carrier; don’t even think about it when it’s real deal: shoot the dog. I’ve sprayed countless dogs that just kept coming at me. Had to beat dogs with rocks. Carrier in Newport RI was attacked on a porch and had to have his arm amputated. Is second guessing worth an arm? How about your genitals?

Shoot. Kill.

When I first bought my current house we had a neighbor who used to let her viscous white shepard run wild and terrorize the street.
F*ker came after me while I was snow blowing the driveway.
He almost got run through the chute.
Scared him bad enough he would go the other way every time he saw me after.

Since my plans never work out, I just plan to fail, and accidentally succeed.

I don't have it in me to shoot a dog. As sad as it is to say, I value a dog more than the average person. Might just be reflective of who I've been around over the years. Of course, I don't know how I'd act if a dog went after my 11 year old. Suppose if it ever happens, I'll find out.

I’m the same way and I make no apologies for it. The unfortunate fact of the matter is that most people suck and all these dog threads reaffirm my position.
Every time I’ve had a dog issue in my life it’s been because it was owned by some irresponsible douche.
That’s why I reiterate in these threads that most people shouldn’t own dogs.
Nobody (including them) wants to deal with their zero trained, zero disciplined, shit bred “fur baby” acting a fool while they yell “he’s friendly and just wants to say hi.”

Of course, I don't know how I'd act if a dog went after my 11 year old. Suppose if it ever happens, I'll find out.
I imagine you’ll handle business.
Years back myself and my previous shepherd who was 6 months old at the time were attacked by a dog in the middle of the road.
That dog ran out the door behind the owner and it was on.
I beat the hell out of that dog and bounced him off the pavement like bam bam and he wouldn’t quit.
The owner stood by with his arms folded and watched the show.
I’m going to end that story there on a public forum but, I will say that was a one time learning event for my puppy that caused dog aggression as well as aggression towards men that I was never able to fix.

WTBS I’ve always been big into training dogs and I’m really deep into the weeds nowadays with high drive working dogs.
What I can tell people is that there’s no absolutes with dogs. What works with one may not with others. Most dogs will back down if you simply charge them but, it’s not what I’d recommend to the average person. I’d say that pepper spray is going to be your best shot but, if you have a serious dog and it has latched onto someone or something the one thing that always works is to grab the collar and lift.
If done correctly, no matter how serious the dog, it will be unconscious in a few seconds. The same thing can be accomplished with a regular nylon leash. Put the clasp through the loop and make a slip knot around it’s neck and lift.
Most people try hitting them and quite honestly just make the dog fight harder and the attack last longer.
Obviously, if shooting is a legal option that would be my first choice but, if not an option, shutting off oxygen and blood to the brain is your only choice.
I wish I knew this back then.

ETA. TLDR.

Dealing with this with my uncle's two 140 (M) and 110lb (F) labrador retrievers. The smaller one jumps and will aggressively lick your face if you let her. It's been 6 months and I've already made progress with a once-a-week visit. The smaller girl dog understands I will not pay a single moment of attention to her unless she is sitting. If she gets up, I stop petting her. The other one has a head full of rocks, but is better trained in terms of being off-leash and listening to verbal commands. Until its time for attention, then he just walks up to you and leans in enough to knock you down if you aren't ready for it. The smaller female if she gets loose will be gone for 20 to 30 minutes, but comes right back.

Good on you for trying.
Their weight alone tells me that he doesn’t give a shit.
Consistency is key and with you being the only one pulling the cart you have your work cut out for you but, it sounds like you’re making a difference.
Best of luck man!!!

Dogs, unlike man, do not act out of malice. Even when they attack it is instinct, or fear, or they have been trained to do so. But they do not hate you.

If I ever have to kill a dog to protect a loved one, I will do so with great sadness.

^^^^^^ This.
Everything comes down to prey or defense.
Even the ones trained to do so are acting off instinct and a good decoy can toggle them back and forth between the two.
If you hear a high pitched bark it’s prey, deep and gutteral is defense.
The training side of it is basically technique and most of all control.
Whenever someone looks at me and says “omg you taught that dog to bite?????”
My response is always
“No, that dog sure as hell doesn’t need ME to teach it to bite.”

Im surprised spray didn’t stop them. What were you carrying? I’ve sprayed three dogs and this stuff stopped them quickly.

Sprayed myself with it when I was young (maybe 12, dad was a mail carrier too) and it’s nasty stuff. Petroleum based so it’s like napalm you can’t get it off (i guess it’s meant to cling to dog hair ya know) it drove off 90% of dogs that came after me, but I had 3 big dogs that wanted to feast on my ass and they just ATE IT and kept coming. I’ll never forget how it felt to know “I can’t reason with this being” while it attacked me. I ended up kicking one as hard as possible in the throat after it stalked me around a pizza parlor. I just had it. Thing collapsed after it ran 30 ft wheezing and of course then here comes the shit head owner “YOOO BRO HES NICE!!”

An actual balanced response. The dog threads on NES are always pathetic. "Id f***ing empty the magazine and not think twice of it! Shoot to kill! f*** your fur baby!"

Half the guys with these responses are too afraid to own a gun thats not on one of the 18 different lists in MA. Give me a break.

The problem is most dog owners aren’t always pathetic. It’s only the vast majority of the time. Just yesterday had a don’t worry he’s friendly come charging up on this guy. The woman’s like is it OK? What if it’s not, biyotch? Your dog is already there

Last I checked, the USPS issued anti-dog pepper spray is considerably weaker than the stuff sold for use against two legged miscreants.

So what would you do, let the dog destroy you because "it is the owners fault"?

It does s*ck, no one here is saying they want to hurt dogs. But if they are attacked, or their dog on a leash is attacked, they will do something.
