SAS glock fails, bludgeons Taliban to death with a hammer

How is this four pages of trying to figure out how he used a hammer to kill the baddies, he hit them until they were dead., doesn't matter what type of hammer or if it was with a blunt or pointy end. I worry about some of you.
Speaking for myself, I’m just curious about why he wasn’t carrying a better gun. In other words, I’m hoping to find out why he had to use a hammer.

Au contraire. If you use the claw end it can get stuck in the skull or tangled up in the turban.

An in-duh-vidual I know from the competition shooting community was caught outside a southern state casino unarmed a few decades ago. There were two assailants. He blocked the hammer. When attacked and the miscreant dropped after which he went medieval, but did not kill either subject. He was questioned for hours and served pizza at the local PD; saw the suspects brought to jail after hospital treatment; thanked and sent on his way. He was white and non-belligerent so he was not arrested when police challenged him with the hammer in his hand and ordered him to drop it.

My bet is that it wasn't a hammer at all. More likely a combat tomahawk, like the "Vietnam Tomahawk" sold by Cold Steel. Unless he was part of a construction battalion, he would not be carrying a hammer. The combat tomahawk is a nasty weapon in CQC. One forward swing with the blade splits the skull of the enemy in front of you and the backswing with the spike nails the one behind or to the side of you
I was thinking the same thing...why did he have a hammer? A knife would have been a sure back up weapon

Glock is considered in many circles a better gun. Remember, our Navy Seals chose Glock at one point. He had to use a hammer because, the Glock stopped functioning. No rocket science here.

Apparently this story first appeared in "The Daily Star," a UK tabloid with, shall we say, a "flexible" attitude towards the truth. No name is given for either the reporter, the SAS hero, or the source. But it does state:

"There wasn’t enough room to use a long-barrelled weapon so the Brit used his Glock 9mm pistol and grabbed a claw hammer.”

Fact, fiction, or a mix, it's not surprising that officials refused to confirm or deny the report.

Starting in 2013, the UK armed forces adopted the Glock 17 as their standard sidearm.

I get that.

But judging from the article, in that particular time and place, the pistol this soldier had was definitely not "better."

I'm still wondering why he hadn't got a rifle or, as another poster mentioned, a knife. The hammer remains a very odd choice.

His pursuit, his weapons choice.

Well, I don't poo poo Glocks, or 1911's. I have, trust in and carry both Glocks and 1911's. Like any tool, they can malfunction. Even the head of hammer flies off, once in a while.
I believe I have broken more hammers than pistols of any flavor. In my 40 years and ~40k rounds or so of average normal non-combat shooting.

I can say that my Ruger KP95 was immune to Florida sweat and rain, but my G26 didn't like mag changes while wet.

A hammer has more reach than most knives. You'd be better served in a knife fight with a hammer than a shorter knife.

You're sneaking into a cave against the Taliban. Are you saying you'd rather have a hammer than a knife?

I mean, it's obviously an academic question. If the news account is correct (and I'm more and more convinced they're leaving out A LOT of important details), the hammer worked. And arguing with success is not useful. I'm just saying this SASer is probably not going to want to repeat this process, and is likely to rethink his loadout next time.

Yeah, If I could choose between the std issue ka-bar and a big framing hammer I would def pick the hammer every time.

Lol. You're the SAS.

You're not carrying anything standard-issue, and certainly not a Ka-Bar. Unless you want one. You can literally carry anything you want. If a hammer's what you'd pick, I'm surprised.

Either one would do. My choice would have been the Cold Steel "Trailmaster Bowie". It has a fully sharpened "false edge" on the top of the blade, for the back cut, if necessary. These guys aren't mall ninjas; they carry only what they need.

If the false edge is sharpened, does that make it a false false edge? Or a false real edge? A real false edge? An actual edge? Knives are complicated. A lot...

I'd like to know what the failure actually was.
It was dark, looks like he couldn't see.
How the f are you supposed to fix it?
Make all kinds of noise and give up your location?
In a cave? a pebble could have fell in there and jammed it.
If it was a 1911 the dust in the air alone would have caused it to fail.
Not a glock fanboy, but come on, man.... One guys glock fails=all glocks suck.
We would have heard the same if it was a sig or beretta.
A spring could have snapped, striker/hammer or trigger. I know they don't have hammers, but same function. Internal/trigger safety could have sheared off.

What was the round count on the gun? I probably have close 10k rounds through my 47 now. Feels like it's still breaking in.

Well, someone sure did...

I'm also wondering whether he brought the hammer in with him (unlikely, I think) or found it and improvised. Against three BGs. At which point... where were his buddies?

The more I think about this...
