OK, boys and girls, I confess. For years I was a 1911-hater. I thought the darn things were an old, unreliable design, requiring shooters to spend hundreds of dollars to just to make even a new gun run reliably.

All this changed a month ago when I bought my first S&W 1911 from a pal who was moving out of state. Boy, is that a sweet-shooting, never fail firearm.

I liked it so much that last weekend I bought another S&W 1911. This one is a commander-sized SC Scandium model. It is every bit as much of a honey as it's safe-mate.

The interesting thing is the slightly shorter barrel length, and ten ounces of reduced weight make a huge differences in the feel of the gun.

So, I am proud to say, I am officially a S&W 1911-lover. Sure, I have other loves, Sigarms, Glock, S&W revolvers, among others, but I welcome the newest members of my little gun collection.

Sweet!

1911's are great, and they don't HAVE to be Smith's either.

I built mine, the first handgun I had for over 20 years. Essex Frame (Island Pond, 2 digit S/N), Colt mil NM slide, hand picked parts. Best thing? Private sale.

I've picked up a "few" more handguns since.

Actually, in MA, they pretty much DO have to be Smiths...

Glad to hear the good news, Darius. I'm looking to buy a SW1911 in January as my reward for having quit smoking for five years. I've heard LOTS of good things about these guns, and additional verification is always appreciated.

Y'know, the old "trust but verify" deal... ;)

Actually, no they don't.

As anyone familiar with GOAL should already be well aware, SVI was the FIRST 1911 placed on the Approved Firearms Roster. SVI has donated one of its guns as THE top raffle prize to GOAL for the last 3 years, so that approval ought to be well known to forum readers.

Para Ordnance now (finally) has many models on the roster as well.

Some people really need to keep up....... [roll]

I agree that folks "ass-u-me" a lot here (or about MA) without checking accuracy.

SVI has some very nice guns, but everything I've seen are very expensive "race guns", nothing suitable for CCW.

Para Ordance does indeed have some CCW models. On the other hand, you don't commonly see them in dealers' showcases. In fact Para lists only 2 dealers in MA and the one in Eastern MA appears to be a home-based business that I never heard of (and I'm not too far from this alleged location).

So the only 1911s that folks commonly see in showcases are S&W and this leads one to an incorrect conclusion that that is all there is here.

So, to Those Who Have Gone Before, where does the path lead from here?
It leads further and further into the darkness. After your first full-size 1911, you decide to get a compact model. Then you hear the siren song of a lightweight compact model. Then a double stack. At this point, you decide to try the various gunsmithing options, but you don't want to be without a full-size while yours is at a gunsmith, so you get another. You may even get seduced by a Delta Elite.

Mass Misinformation, redux

"SVI has some very nice guns, but everything I've seen are very expensive "race guns", nothing suitable for CCW."

It appears that you have not looked. Yes, SVI's are expensive, but I would hardly call the first two guns SVI donated to GOAL - each a stainless Government Model; the last w/ a fiber optic front sight - a "race gun." Go to www.sviguns.com and see what's there.

As for "Eastern Mass.," try Northeast Trading on the Plainville/N. Attleboro line. Ted had Para's in stock the last time I was there. [wink]

The Auto Ordnance 1911A PK is now Mass compliant and I saw it in my local shop for $480. Not to be confused with the older Kahr West Hurley NY version that was crap.
