This is truly sad story that seems like it was written by an Onion writer.

Russian Federation armed forces Navy ship ... a spy ship made to spy over NATO ships, could not see Ashot-7 in dense fog. Ashot-7 was carrying sheep near the straight of Bosphorus. Two ships collided and Russian navy ship received a hole below waterline which lead to it sinking.

Yes, a ****ing spy ship could not see approaching barge with a bunch of sheep and was sunk by it. [rolleyes] ... I am speechless. 75 sailors were evacuated by Turkish coast guard. 15 are missing. No sheep was hurt ... [rolleyes]

About as bad as the USS Midway running over a Filipino fishing trawler in 1987 that was lit up like a Christmas tree a 0 dark 30 at night. Someone was sleeping at the wheel. Seems someone may have been napping on this Russian vessel as well.

What is equipped with "Liman" At the end of January the ship returned from the campaign to the Mediterranean Sea. He performed tasks as part of the permanent operational connection of the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean. According to the media, "Liman" is the average reconnaissance ship of the project 861M. Hydrographic vessel "Liman" was built in Gdansk (Poland) on the shipyard "Stochni Full Knosti". Launched on August 19, 1970. In December 1970, he joined the Baltic Fleet. In 1974 the vessel was transferred to the Black Sea Fleet. In 1989 the ship was upgraded to a medium reconnaissance ship. The range of navigation is 9700 miles at a speed of 11 knots. The crew is 85 people. The ship has a radar system "Don", a hydroacoustic system "Bronze". Radio reconnaissance equipment: Rotor-N, Vakhta-M, Vakhta-10, Vakhta-12, MPR-1-7, Vitok-AK, Vizir-M, Uzel, Kaira "and others. Of the weapons on board there is only a portable anti-aircraft missile system "Igla".

Pretty typical of Russian armed forces. They really struggle to get stuff to, you know, work. No one wants to be a poorly paid engineer over there and the old engineers are dying off.

Someone's gonna have an "accident" on their way home... assuming they survived the sinking.

I was in the USN 1974-80, and my two DDs always had two lookouts with binoculars. We never had any collisions.

Yeah, I was in the USN too and a lot of good those binoculars did in pea soup fog. We had a lookout on the bow in fog also but by the time you see something it's rather late.

Speaking of Russian ships - not trying to hijack the thread, but if you have Netflix, there is a new (new to Netflix) movie they added a few days ago with Ed Harris called Phantom, about a Russian submarine that disappears in the 60's. the movie is from 2013. It's a true story. Was OK movie, probably 3.5-4 starts.
