Hello NES brain trust,

I just bought a Ruger 10/22 after months of procrastination. First thing I usually do with new guns is trigger work.

What do you guys (and gals!) suggest I buy?

Looking for something modestly priced that wont breal the bank. I looked at the Timney Trigger GB but dont want to put the cash down right now for it.

Whats your suggestions?

I shoot mine stock and learn to shoot it as is.

Unless you're shooting some sort of competition with it, I would never buy a trigger that costs more than the gun.

I did mine myself. Lightened it by about 60%. Haven't tried a gauge on it but it's really light.

Ill check that out. I just like to keep the integrity of the gun intact. Its an older model so id like to know I could keep it stock/no mod if needed later down the line.
Did it years ago with minimal gunsmithing knowledge. Almost took too much off [rofl].

The way I see it, all guns are just simple mechanics that the manufacturer decides to upgrade where needed. For what a 10/22 is, the price is understandable. But what seperates it from the higher end models?

I would like to upgrade the trigger somewhere down the line. Maybe eventually comp, but a small investment can make these things comparable to a $500 gun for less money.

For short money, I get it. A $300 trigger on a 10/22? Ummmm no.

For some people, you're really only paying for the receiver when you buy a stock 10/22. It's incredibly easy (and popular) to spend 5+ times the original guns cost on aftermarket parts.

Yeah not gunna happen. Sub $200 I can justify but there will be a point where my shooting ability cannot differentiate between $150 trigger assy and a $270 trigger assy. Thats some fine tuned joint/muscle training right there. I just want a lighter crisper trigger. Colddayinhell has me thinking... but I really hate messing with older guns.

Brimstone Gunsmithing does a good trigger job at a reasonable price. I got a couple of their Tier 2 jobs with the Rimfire Technology trigger and spring and they turned out great. They'll cerakote the housing for another $15 if you want.

The drawback is that you have to mail your trigger group away so you are looking at a few weeks turnaround.

For short money, get a Volquartsen target hammer (~$30) and if you want to go a little further use the link that ColdDayInHell posted. Plenty of better and more expensive options out there but this is the best bang for your buck IMO

Volquartsen auto bolt release and target hammer, $45 from Midway or Brownells.

This will fix that awful bolt release, and will lighten and smoothen your trigger pull. Money well spent.

The difference between a stock action, and one with this kit is huge. The difference between an action with this kit installed and one of those $300 trigger assemblies is minimal. This will serve the needs of 95% of Ruger 10/22 shooters out there.

Swap out the hammer for a VQ one. Waaaaay less than doing the trigger and most of the benefit.

$45 and totally worth it.

Target hammer recommended above plus auto bolt release. You can modify the bolt release yourself with a Dremel too, but I'm lazy.

Yeah first thing I noticed when fiddling with it is that the bolt release sucks! That release by the mag is just plain uncomfortable. Isnt a huge issue but a $45 mod that will alleviate two core issues, big time money well spent!

If you plan to shoot iron sights, I also highly recommend Tech Sights:

It's another $60, but between this and the VQ kit, you take a good rifle and make it a great rifle. Functionally speaking, it's basically a .22 caliber M1/M14. This plus a sling is the setup recommended by Appleseed.

I bought just the Volquartsen hammer from Brownell's. Night and day difference.

You'll also either want to do the auto bolt release mod or buy the new part. The mod takes a Dremel and about 15 minutes of your time and makes shooting it MUCH more enjoyable.

And going to Appleseed is my goal this year. I have the sling already.

Checking out the tech sights now.

Anybody deal with CT Precision Chambering?

Thinking of sending my 10/22 to them to do some work

What kind of work do you want done?

I don't want to sound like a dick, but it seems like they do the kind of high end precision work where if you have to ask, you probably aren't going to benefit from the work they do. Seems like overkill for most uses of the 10/22.

If you really want an assessment, I'd check in with Rimfirecentral.com - those are the guys with the $1,000+ Ruger 10/22s, they'd be better able to comment on that level of work.

THIS x 1,000. Add in the buffer. Add in the tech sights. If you do a light polish on the parts it is night and day. Every once in a while I shoot our spare that doesn't have the bolt release, etc, and I think....what a POS next to the modded ones, and I will get around to ordering the upgrades. Then it goes back in the safe.

I wonder if anyone has hipped Ruger to the fact that we all think their standard bolt release is stupid , that every rifle really should have a sling , and that I personally hate their stock sights ?

The safety items...they're FOR THE CHILDREN.

Of course, my kids can do their mag changes much faster and safer with the modded bolt release.....
