At the start of a a consultation among tribal leaders, in the Sangin district of northern Helmand province, Kennedy was introduced as a senior U.S. military leader. After his introduction, Kennedy stepped to the back of the crowd to observe the meeting, or “shura.”

Sometime shortly after, as the meeting was in progress, “an Afghan local national came up from behind and hit him with a rock in the face,” said Maj. Gabrielle Chapin, spokeswoman for Regional Command Southwest, in an e-mail.

Reacting swiftly to the attack, a Marine serving as Kennedy’s security “immediately fired on the local, killing him,” Chapin said.
