This statement makes it sound like they're capable of thought.

    This.

I am actually sad for our State, as well as our Country. I am a first generation American who is so grateful for the sacrifices my parents made to get here, legally. I am living the American dream; educated, self employed and god willing will retire in comfort and will leave some wealth to my children. Unfortunately, I feel like everything I believe and have worked for is under constant attack.

Possibly because it is, and by the same creatures who have been at civilization's throat since there has been such a thing: "dat voman" called them the "second handers" and we here at NES like to make jokes about NPCs. Joke's on us, of course, because these people - their leaders, actually - mean business. That means control. Even if it means destroying absolutely everything they're controlling - so long as, end of day, they're in charge of that one molecule left of life, they've Won.[thinking]

Safe to assume the candy found here would include Halls cough drops, strawberry shaped candies otherwise never found in the public market, a mere two root beer barrels, and the ever prevalent keys to a VW Scirocco.

Except the translation of the motto is not quite accurate. At least according to this:

    From Webster:

Definition of ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem
: with the sword she (Massachusetts) seeks tranquil peace under liberty : through battle we seek peace, but only with liberty—motto of Massachusetts

    From Wikipedia:

Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem is a Latinpassage and the official motto of the U.S. Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The phrase is often loosely translated into English as "By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty." The literal translation, however, is "she seeks with the sword a quiet peace under liberty." The "she" in question refers to the word manus from the full phrase manus haec inimica tyrannis ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem, which means "this hand, an enemy to tyrants, seeks with the sword a quiet peace under liberty."

It was written c. 1660 by English soldier-statesman Algernon Sidney, who was an opponent of Charles IIand who was later executed for treason. The motto was first adopted in 1775 by the Massachusetts General Court (the official name of the state legislature) and applied to the temporary seal of Massachusetts. On December 13, 1780, the legislature approved its application to the current Great Seal of Massachusetts.
