I have a Remington 870, it had a scope on it that I had put on years ago with a cheapo side saddle mount, I was looking to get a 20" slug barrel for it with cantilever scope mount but they are stupid expensive IMHO, I really don't want another side saddle mount or B square. Should I/Would you drill and tap it and have a rail mounted to the top of the receiver or should I trade it for a Mossberg.

Ultimately what I am looking to do is make the shotgun all purpose. I currently only have a 24" rifled barrel for the 870 and don't want to waste money I would like to have a 20-22" rifled slug barrel, a 20-22" barrel with removable choke for Turkey and a 18" barrel for HD. The 870 is preferred since I can add an extension to the mag for when it is set up for HD.

the price spread between dealers is rediculous. i just picked up a new rifled slug barrel for my grandsons 870 and paid 175.00 for it. some dealers wante 310.00 for the barrel. it didnt matter if it had rifle sights or came ready for scope to go on that was the price. i didnt object too much as we had gotten the 870 used for 100.00. saved money on gun but spent some on the slug barrel so i figured we kind of evened out on the entire deal. its like i just dont understand how there can be that much difference in the price of the exact same item between dealers. i dont object to someone making money thats why they are in business. its just the huge difference.

I believe that if drill and tap for a mount was good for the 870 Remington would have done it already. I don't think you will gain anything over the saddle type mount.
Try combat solutions they made a decent mount for the 870. I have a square B mount and it was rock solid. I had weaver rings holding a tasco red dot that served well for many years.
I think the same reason why remington never offered mount holes on the receiver is the same reason they don't put the rear sight on the receiver for the slug and rifle barrels. just no gain
boghog one, might I make a suggestion
Dont by multiple barrels, you could probably find used 870s in the configurations you want for close to the same money as the barrels if you look. I will give you my end result
HD gun: I found a 20g youth synthestic model with 18" barrel perfect size for HD easy to manipulate. One once slugs are one once slugs reguardless of 12 or 20 150.00
870 express combo found used, hardly. 125.00 guy couldnt wait to get it out of his safe
my original 870 express has the 28" barrel with rem chokes purchased new in 1989
I then lucked out and found a 870 with the rifled barrel at KTP that someone really FUBAR'd the wood and exterior metal with home made engraveings 65 bucks. Barrel looked horrible BUT I reconized that mess as plastic build up from never cleaning it. A few cans of paint alittle jb weld to fill in the hack engraving on the reciever, presto

so look around, its tough to make one gun do all. In the end you will most likely not have the correct barrel on it when you REALLY NEED it.
