I have a HK94 that I am going to file a form 1 on .I want to have it remarked to a MP5 and my understanding is that you cannot remark a NFA firearm. Do I have to remarked it before the form1 is returned approved or before the short barrel is in place? The 2 smiths that I am thinking about doing this are both closed for the holidays. I will also have my info engraved at the same time .Thanks Brian

If it's a true HK94, you might want to re-think messing with it.
It will be alot easier to sell as an original 94 if/when you decide to, the prices are still climbing on them.
Just my $.02

With regard to your request to be able to remark a Heckler and Koch
SP89 pistol as an MP5K model, there are no provisions in the
Federal firearms laws to prohibit such a practice. However, the
serial number must remain unaltered and not obliterated.

tl;dr: go for it.

doesn't even say you need to have a FFL do it, either.
