Anyone else shooting 6.5 CM in the AR platform? I've seen a lot of info on the net regarding reloading 6.5 CM, but not a lot of hard data for gas guns. Most of the posts regarding gas guns are opinions or anecdotal.

Tried a few different factory loads and settled on Winchester Match 140 grain. Though by far Lapua is my favorite brass, I do like Winchester better than most. Here's a 3-shot bug hole and a relatively tight 5-shot group at 100 yards:

Once I have enough brass, I'll wean myself away from the factory ammo. This morning I finally tested some hand loads. Not a bad day for first time reloading 6.5 CM:

Stupid Iphone has the photo turned, but best group in what should be upper right . Worst group center with Magnetospeed attached. IMG_0743.jpg

Self-built AR-6.5 CM with a 20" tapered target barrel, 100 yards. Using the JP High Pressure BCG.

Tried Nosler RDF 140's with IMR 4350 and Hornady 123 ELD's with Varget. Best group upper right was the Hornady ELD's loaded .005" jump off the lands. Varget, close but under max load per Hodgdon specs. No signs of overpressure on cases or primers. Once fired Winchester brass, still in spec so no need to trim yet. Need to download the chrony data, but as I recall the ES was very low.

The RDF's were not that great with groups slightly above 1 MOA. I think the IMR 4350 was part of the problem- too much variation in velocity. It's supposed to be near identical to H4350 but a little less temperature stable.

I have read that 6.5 CM in gas guns favored bullets lighter than the 140's and that the Hornady 123's were particularly good for the AR-308 platform. If you search 'Varget for 6.5 Creedmoor', you'll see one or two favorable posts followed by a few dozen posts about how H4350 is supposed to be the best. My theory was that in a 20" barrel, especially a barrel with gas port; the faster burning Varget would be better matched to the system as well as the lighter projectile. Today's results are at least one data set in favor of that.

I'm curious. I don't shoot mine through a gas gun but the more data points the better. The 140 grain ELD's are the most ballistically superior I have found (both on paper and in flight). I have a handful of powder coming but for a bolt gun so no Varget.

The Nosler RDF G1 BC, at .658, seems about as good as it gets until you are looking at the big boy calibers like .338 LP. 140 ELD's can't be that far away.

Results with the AR make me want to built a chassis platform bolt gun, but I have too much tied up in CMP match guns to mess with that for now.

I'll post chrony data this evening.

Here's the chronograph data. I'll only run a series of 5 shots to collect the data- good enough for government work and I don't want all shots with the Magnetospeed hanging off the end of the barrel.

Pretty happy with the velocity of the 123's / Varget combo. I could push either one harder- I have not hit the top of the recommended loads, plus I am using the JP high pressure BCG in case I want to run a little hot.

S-D of 7.4 / ES 17 isn't bad for using a cheap powder scale, plus the gas gun X-factor. It's worth about 4.5" elevation variance at 1000 yards. Compare to the Winchester Match 140 factory ammo, with a ES of 93 and a S-D of 34.5. That would be frustrating at the 1000 yard distance.

My 140 gr ELD-M factory match loads are chrono'd around 2700 fps. I would say you have a ways to go with that Varget.

What's your barrel length? 24" I forget how many fps is lost per inch, but I'll be dropping a few at 20" plus the gas powered issue will suck a few fps.

The 123's at 2770 fps muzzle are still good for supersonic at 1000 yards, so if I push a little harder to ~2850 fps +-, should be in more than good enough shape. Eyeballing the primers and judging by the felt recoil, looks like the load is relatively mild.
