I went to the range last week looking to see which 45acp handgun would be better suited for me to carry. For this experiment I tested out two new to me handguns that I bought for this application. They were a Colt Defender 1911 and a Glock 30SF. During this range test I shot 100 rounds of 230gr FMJ out of each gun and tested the following. Ease of getting out of an IWB holster, ease of bringing the gun into action, recoil/follow up shots, feeling of gun in hand, capacity, comfort while in holster, and most importantly accuracy.

This is how they compared.

Ease of getting out of IWB Holster:
This went to the Colt Defender. It may be due to it's slimmer profile and clean lines but I repeatedly was able to get the Colt out of the holster quicker then I could the Glock. For whatever reason I seemed to have a harder time getting the Glock out. As to the holster I was using a White Hat Maxtuck holster with interchangeable Kydex so you can use the same holster base and just swap out the kydex that's molded to the handgun you are using.

Ease of bringing gun into action:
By a very slim margin this one went to the Glock. I could easily line up the sights for both handguns, but the Colt took that extra effort to disengage the safety before I could fire the first round. For the 1911 I was carrying Cocked N Locked. With more practice this category will be even as I'd practice disengaging the safety during my draw.

Recoil/Follow Up Shots:
I was very surprised by this, but the clear winner in this category was the Glock. Recoil in the 1911 was significantly more then the Glock. Shot after shot the 1911 would dig into the web of my thumb right under the beavertail. Muzzle flip was much more pronounced in the 1911 as well, which made follow up shots slower.

Feeling of gun in hand:
This is going to be subjectively different for everyone, but for me the 1911 just felt better in my hand. As has been said by many, the Glock has a blocky feel to it. While the Glock wasn't uncomfortable it just wasn't as comfortable in my hand as the 1911

Capacity:
Hands down the Glock. 10+1 beats 7+1 every day of the week.

Comfort in the holster:
This went to the 1911. It's slimmer profile and clean lines made it easier and more comfortable to carry around the range. Granted I only did about 30 minutes of carrying for each, but the 1911 didn't dig into me on the edges like the Glock did. They both weigh 24oz so the weight wasn't that different. The extra 3 rounds add a little, but nothing really noticeable.

Accuracy:
Once again I was surprised, but the Glock won this category. Less recoil and muzzle flip lead to quicker and smaller groups then what I could do with the 1911. I'm positive I could get the accuracy better on the 1911 with practice. But head to head the Glock won this

If I'm going to be honest with myself I clearly expected, and wanted, the 1911 to outperform the Glock. From above that obviously wasn't the case. Now I need to give some thought on where to differentiate between comfort/ease, which the 1911 wins and functionality, which the Glock wins.

Time for some serious thinking.

Any thoughts on this?

I was going to come in and suggest you shoot an M&P45c, but after looking at the specs, it looks like it is almost identical in size to the G30SF, thought it may have been a little more slim for you.

If you shoot the defender enough it'll also stop working. Good luck shooting a G30SF to failure. I'm sure its doable but you're gonna be at the range a lot longer.

Back when I carried officers mods I had 2 identical guns for precisely this reason. I had a carry gun and a practice gun. I would never re-carry a dirty officer's mod. Not reliable enough to trust it while dirty.

In my opinion a 30SF/Gen4/30S pretty much dominates this category of gun, at least for me. I'll never own another 1911 that has less than a 4" barrel ever again.

That was my experience with every carry size 1911. I want to love it but I never had one that didn't malfunction. I only owned Colts but they always had a ftf or some problems. My G23 never has in 20 plus years.

Running ConTact, (modified IDPA), one day and my Colt Defender just went "click". Damn. Slap, rack, "click"...

Chris then schooled me on taking apart the slide, which I'd never done before. The firing pin block was so fouled, it was blocking the firing pin... Not good for a carry gun. I'd always field-stripped my guns and cleaned them. Definite learning moment for me that day.

Yeah not judging or trying to sound like a 36 fan boy but if you carrying the 45 why not give that a go. Clearly the same number of rounds as most 1911s which your comfortable with but not like caring a cell phone from 1970. Just my .02 personally I find it hard to argue with the 17 with 17 rounders but everyone has their likes

Before I bought the 30SF I tried shooting both the 30SF and 36. The 36 fit my hand like my 26 does. I have larger hands so I've never like the feeling of having my pinky finger not up against the grip. With the added recoil of the 45acp it felt like I didn't have a firm grip on the 36 for quick follow up shots. Didn't care for that, so I went with the 30SF which does seem slimmer then the 30 I also shot.

I carry both though not a colt. I carry either a glock 30sf or a eb SF carry though for me the only difference is in the rounds carried. The recoil isn't much different for me. The main consideration is will which will print and which one won't.

For the 1911, I have 8 rd mags and carry 4 spare so really it is 41 rounds 1911 to 31 rounds Glock.

To each their own I just don't know your level of gun nuttery when it comes to research the 36-39 are glocks redheaded step family Lotta ppl over look them glad you went with what you liked did you get a Gen 4 by chance? They are actually pretty slim not like my 29 I had a few months back

I'm a good old American boy. I like my Smiths and my 1911's. But I must say, ever since I got my hands on that Austrian gal, it's been nothing but love. She may not be a looker, but by golly, can she go bang every time it counts.

LOL, I guess I'm probably on the top of the gun nuttery scale. Not a bad thing through! [wink]

As to my 30SF, yes it is a Gen 4. Luckily found someone on NES selling it for a good price. Damn hard to find around MA.
