Nice warm sunny day... Check
Lots of loaded up ammo in 5 different calibers.....Check
Targets, eye protection, ear protection.....Check
First day I have time to actually go to the range in 2 months....Check

Arriving at range and seeing that it is closed for "Law enforcement qualifications/Training"........Damn...
I knew I should checked the schedule but they only train like 3 or 4 days a years at the Barnstable range.
Now I have to sit, watch football and drink beer......

This is why you need a membership at more than one club. I've had similar things happen over the years that having at least 1 and a backup is a good idea.

Or join a club that built a second range so members could shoot while the LE train. We also post in advance and on club web page the dates that the range will be busy with LE.

Ain't it great how friggin LEO's get discount after discount, while we pay the mortgages on those places, just so WE have to wait to use them.

Or... You could just wait for them to poke holes in their targets with a pen and turn them in for qualification. Usually doesn't take long. [shocked]

I know this feeling, (kinda of) hit the range the other day for the first time an a while, couldn't hit nothing! Ahhh front sight, PRESS!!

What the hell is wrong with that? [wink]

I know when it's that time of year because there is no .40 caliber ammo at Walmart. [laugh]

sorry for your loss

Barnstable is town owned, so there is no website to announce closures. Supposedly there is an email list to get on, but I've never received anything. I was there Friday and saw the notice, maybe we should update the thread in the ranges section of this forum for future closings.

By the way, they close it a lot more than 3-4 days a year, they had it 5 days in September. They also do a horrible job cleaning up after themselves.

At least there's lots of brass for the taking.

How is Bass River R&G?
Nice clean facility with a fairly new indoor handgun range. If I remember correctly it is $150 joining fee and $150 a year thereafter. I only rarely shoot rifle so I never checked out their rifle setup. The distance to the clubhouse is just a bit too far for me to get a return on the investment. If it were closer I would utilize the facilities more and that would take some of the sting out of the membership costs. I am thinking about checking out Plymouth (first I need to see how long of a drive it is).

I was sick last week and missed my normal range visit. Had to make it up over this weekend with a visit both Saturday and Sunday.
I also am from the 2 membership club so I can always assure I have a place to toss some lead around.

Keep in mind that having police that know how to shoot is an asset to the residents of the town. In theory anyway if not alway in practice.

Yeah I agree but... having citizens that know how to shoot is an asset to a nation and I pay all the cost.

The tax payer foots the bill for the gun, ammo and training. I think they should maintain there own ranges and encourage LEOs to practice whenever they can. You know, like Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon. He had a 10 lane range right behing the copy machine. [grin]

That's almost as bad as getting to the range and realizing you left the keys to your range cases at home.

Been there, seen that, and after trying few keys off my big keyring...SCORE!

The shot lock's cable lock are cheap enough that half the ones I've seen use the same key! [grin]

Its pretty much the same everywhere, but its great if youre a brass junkie.

Also if you sit and wait for them to leave, youll likely get first dibs on plenty of unused ammo.

Brass, Yes, ammo no. I highly suggest that you break that habit now while you still have all your digits and eyes. NEVER shoot ammo found on a range, you have no knowledge of its origin or its quality. Just because the cops were the last ones shooting there doesn't mean its their ammo, it could have been there when they arrived and been someone's defective reloads.
Its ok to pull it apart for components but never shoot it.

It has happened to me many times and I just stopped going to Barnstable, that and the backstops are always shot to hell so you can't even staple a target to them. The traffic on weekends in summer is ridiculous too.

The fees are not worth the inconveniences to me.

I could be wrong but I think he means ammo given to him from the leo's. Not found at the range.

When LE is qualifying, they tend to drop some ammo and since they don't pay for it, they don't bother to pick it up or even clean up (most places)!

At a couple of clubs I belong to/have belonged to . . . at the request of the PD, the club banned members from being present while the PD was on the range. Believe me it is MUCH SAFER to be miles away in almost every case. The range safety violations you see on a LE-in-use range are shocking and disturbing. During the 18 years I qualified with the PD/MCJTC, I've seen officers unholster and handle their guns during a ceasefire while people were downrange, pointing guns at fellow officers, etc.

At one of my clubs, I stopped by one day to see if a certain member might be there and as I walked thru one of the ranges there were ~5 LEOs (in civvies) chatting (electronic muffs are great for picking up conversations) . . . two of them were downrange (ceasefire) changing targets while two were fiddling with the guns on the bench (actions closed, status unknown). Having worked for 2 PDs over the years, one thing I learned is that you can never tell a LEO that he's doing something wrong/unsafe . . . it just doesn't go over well at all. I just high-tailed it out of there. . . it was the safest thing for ME to do.
