Raid in Springfield yields an major arsenal

The important distinction is 'illegal possession'. If you started seeing many of these, and it was clear it wasn't legit, it wouldn't be long before things got ugly.

That's the thing though, if you want to go all 1984/Animal Farm on this you could ask yourself "how do I know it's legit right now". All we know for sure is that the media is reporting 'illegal possession' because that's what the cops charged them with. If this was the 10th story this week about "police raid home, confiscate an arsenal, arrest two on drug and weapons charges" would most people say anything more than "good, they're getting tough on crime"? What about when so many of these are happening that it's not really news anymore?

I'm not trying to go all Alex Jones conspiracy nut here, particularly not on this single story, but it does make me wonder how small a smokescreen would you need to have the public accept completely screwing over any one of us law abiding citizens. If my neighbor and I get into a fight over him shoveling his snow onto my driveway, can I just call up the cops and say "I was over there just now and I think I saw child porn on his computer" and have them carting him and his computers off while the cameras roll and an officer explains the charges to the evening news - ruining his life even if he's later set free and I'm arrested for making false charges?

Based on my voluminous LE experience watching CSI Miami and The Closer, with the possible exception of none of the seized firearms, none of those firearms are in common use by "street" thugs.

While it seems that Tim and Akeem might have some unseemly hobbies (based on the stolen property charges) that's a starter collection by somebody that has some interesting taste in guns. How many muggers roll with a .410 shotgun?

They're suspending kids for having folded pieces of paper and drawing pictures of guns. The hypersensitivity of society wrt guns is off the charts. ANY raid or confiscation or anything having to do with guns is immediately and automatically deemed as "bad" and will receive zero sympathy. In fact, I would expect nothing but disdain for anyone involved in any incident whatsoever involving guns from the media or people in general.

Am I too cynical?

one million dollars bail? If they were living 100 miles to the north and these guys would be laughed at for such a lame stash.

Unless there is a whole a lot more to the story – it is getting to the point where defending yourself no matter who or why is coming through the door without invitation is most appropriate. For the love of God I hope there is lot more to this story.

@SilverSnake

Yes, there are other possibilities. My surmise would be that if they were doing mass confiscations, they would not publicize it at all. As long as they could get in and get out without, er, fanfare, the neighbors would be told it was no big deal, or maybe they'd see you taken away in the back of a car, but nothing more than that. Any messy scenes that occurred would be played to maximum effect to disparage the resistance and make it clear to the people what would happen if they followed suit.

The idea would be to delay any widespread awareness of what was going on and get ahead of organized resistance as much as possible.

But that's all strictly hypothetical, I have no idea what I'm talking about, so I'm taking off the tinfoil fedora and maybe I'll relax and watch Equilibrium.

Delaney says that detectives received a search warrant for the home after receiving information that Oswald was storing numerous firearms improperly inside his rented room.

Oswald is being held on one million dollars bail.

Good. Depending on how Comm2A's amici case goes at the SJC, this whole thing could get thrown out based on an unconstitutional search.

I don't endorse their side activities or violation of the law, but that fact that's what the warrant was based on is BS.
