If you pull back the charging handle so you see the open chamber and then release the bolt catch so the bolt springs forward without a bullet in the magazine will this damage the gun in any way?

Only if you freeze it in liquid nitrogen first.

I'm confused as to why you'd have a bullet in your magazine, and not a cartridge.
 
Yes it's fine and don't get discouraged by their antics on here you are welcome and people will gladly help you with any issues you may encounter! Do your part though read the forum watch the good videos on YouTube and you will learn tons! Good luck with the black rifle disease though! ;-)
