Given the current situation I was wondering what happens if there is mandatory evacuation & shelter is in a school? Are firearms on person a no-no?

Carrying a firearm on school property without permission is illegal (MGL ch 269 s10j, IIRC). There is no exception in the law for when the school is being used as a shelter.

If you' sat back, made no plans to take care of your own family, and relied on the munificent state to provide shelter for you in case of an emergency, you don't get a lot of sympathy when it comes to carrying arms in your state-assigned quarters. I'm far enough inland and on high enough ground that I don't worry much about hurricanes or floods, but I've had to evacuate due to other emergency conditions before. That's one more reason you have family and friends who think like you. If there aren't enough of them, then you've got to make some other plans well before TSHTF.

Why would anyone ever evacuate to a public school? Never mind mandatory by the gov't, if evacuation is a good idea go further, go to a hotel, a campsite, family/buddies house, whatever. People get out hours in advance go 2 miles and sit in a dumpy gymnasium for a couple of days- stupid. Yesterday you could have driven 6 hours and had a nice weekend camping.

FEMA even told a USR team of sworn officers that they couldn't carry while working in the aftermath of Katrina. The officers told them that due to the inherent risks involved, their department's policy was to always be armed when performing searches. FEMA was adamant, so the officers wished them luck and went back home.
