My father has an ADL 700 Remington rifle. He loves the gun but wants to put a scope on it so I'm planning on doing just that for Christmas. Two questions, I want to get the scope locally at Walmart - something under two hundred dollars as this is just for target and fun, not hunting. What's a good scope available at Walmart that I can use for this gun? Secondly, I'd like to bring this to my local shop (Four Seasons) to have them install it. It appears to be already ready to accept a scope but I can't tell as I've never owned a long gun and I don't know anything about them. This is the ad at Four Seasons:

"Scopes
Buy the gun, scope and mounts from us and we'll mount and bore sight it for you at No Charge.

Please note that the gun must be factory ready to receive a scope mount system. We do not drill and tap.

Otherwise:

Mounting and Boresighting: $20

Boresighting only: $10"

I don't know what mount and bore means. I just want to buy a scope and have them install it. Does anyone own the Remy 700 and can tell me if it can accept it without being drilled and tapped? Thanks.

Mount and Bore sight means that they will install the rings, lap them, and then place the scope in the scope rings.

Then they will bore sight the scope. Which is done a couple of ways. But that will let the rifle shoot on the paper at 50 yards so it won't take as long to get rifle to hit where the scope is at 50 yards.

Then once you're hitting the center of the target at 50 yards, you'll start all over at 100 yards to get it so it's hitting the center of the paper at that distance.

All 700s should be drilled and tapped already

You will need to get bases and rings also if you don't have them.

Walmart sells rings, I'm not sure about bases. You need to get the correct one for both. bases are specific to the gun and rings need to be the correct size for the scope, 30mm or 1"

The best bet would be to bring the rifle to Four Season, talk to Carl and have him set up the rifle. It might cost a few buck more than Walmart, but you will get the correct parts the first time

Thanks for the info. :) My father has been wanting a scope for a while now and when I asked him if he wanted a target gun for Christmas, he asked for a scope for this Remy. I hope to find something good and bring it to Carl to have it installed. Maybe I'll get him a 6 or 7" Ruger New Single Six for his birthday in January too.

I can't wait for my daughter to get out of college so she can buy me stuff for my birthday!
A gift certificate to Sinclair's, Brownells or Creedmoors would be nice!
Thanks for lifting my spirits!

Laura,

Why not check with Carl to see what he might have.

A little secret I learned a few years ago, sometimes Carl has real good deals on scopes. Sometimes used and sometimes new. Ask you you could do a lot better than Wal-Mart. Besides in MA finding anyone at Wal-Mart that knows anything about guns/scopes is damn near impossible.

With a little help from Carl and Staff on Wednesday, my Wife was able to score a relatively rare "all Austrian" Glock 17 in like new condition (no premium price either) . . . proof marks and original anti-seize compound still on the slide. Again on Friday, they helped me pick out the best of the used Glock 22s from a selection of ~10 guns.

You can not do any better than Four Seasons in MA!! Especially if you need a little advice to make your selection.

I'll be sure to ask him, Len, thanks. Cledus, I've actually bought my father a few guns: the Ruger GP100 3" in blue, the Walther P99 with a titanium slide, and I paid the tax and remaining amount on his Remy 870 - he was a little short on the final payment so I made up the difference and never told him about it. As mentioned, he wants the scope on his gun for Christmas but I may follow it up with another Single Six which he enjoys a lot.

Scopes

The Weaver scopes can be surprisingluy good for the $$ - I just picked up a Waever 1x3 for an AR, and it is well built single tube construction with a surprisingly crisp reticle.

Most places don't lap them, just so you know.

Personally, I'm fond of Weaver and Bushnell scopes, especially older steel-tubed Weavers.

I agree that you should take a trip to Four Seasons. I have seen scopes there for as low as $50. Granted they are not the top of the line scopes out there, but for what you are looking to do they will work just fine.

What a good daughter you are!! Wow, your dad's a lucky guy.

Laura,

Can I also stand in line to become your adopted Father? [lol]

You sound like an ideal Daughter, and I'm not joking about that!

On the scopes: Four Seasons usually has the used/traded scopes under the counter, so you do need to ask "what do you have" to find out what might be available. Telling them what the purpose and gun is will help them help you to make a good decision.

Man...instant family now. [shock] Thanks for the info. I'll probably swing by this week and ask Carl about getting the gun set up in time for Christmas. I'm sure my father will love it. :D
