Atlanta 'Captain Dan' made a split second decision and IMHO and professional opinion, the correct one. Eff the chickenshite Department brass who probably hasn't seen a fire in 20 years. God Bless him... 'No good deed goes unpunished'

I noticed the house windows were all barred on the outside, tragic mistake

I can understand both sides here... As much as you want to be a hero, you run in, get f***ed, and put a whole bunch of people at risk that have to now come get you.

Unpopular opinion: Look at Worcester fire. They are losing guys at an unprecedented rate. It's a complex and difficult issue.

His job is one where decisions can affect the lives of others. My computer won't let me see the link but I'm guessing he violated dept protocol by going in alone. I'm glad it worked out well and given the same choices, I'd have done the same.

Yup, even I know that you don't run into a burning house alone. Doing that leaves you vulnerable to getting hurt and then someone has to come in blind after you. Buddy system in effect here.

He did a very courageous thing and it worked out, but yeah, he should be reprimanded for it to discourage other firefighters from doing the same. At the same time, not reprimanded too badly because clearly this guy is a veteran firefighter and did a good thing, just in a bad way. Hard to strike a balance here.

protocols are in place for a reason, like when he puts out the mayday call and 5 others have to go in and find him. it worked out this time but someday the luck will run out.

i say this with respect for the people who choose the fire service for a profession.. my uncle...my moms brother, was a cambridge firefighter for 28 years, as was one of his sons for 18 and another was on the somerville fd. and while i'm on the soapbox, a shout out to my high school buddy's dad, an everett firefighter who i remember being at the scene for 4 days when chelsea burned down in the 70's. ok, stepping off the box now.

The last time I stripped completely naked to take a dump I was probably 3 or 4. Shocked that this didn't get further than it did. LOL

Odds are, It will cost Atlanta in more ways than one for the city's action against this captain.

If the mayor backs the FD's actions, she will be replaced too.

I understand the rational behind protocols .
Every now and then though a one in a million situation comes up that you're just not going to find in the manual.
A man with years of experience made a call based on his best judgment and someone lived because of it.
I'll be f*cked if I'm going to judge him.
I wasn't there and neither were the pencil pushers who are going after him.
