President Trump proposes to cut $1.3 Billion from USCG budget

Based on this "The CG can board ANY vessel. Without probable cause." we should get rid of them all together.

You're right! Let's do that!

This whole thread is predicated on the fact that the CG was just granted this ability when they became a part of DHS. 14USC89 was written and approved in 1949.......

Watched many a CG boat do inspections on the water but they never came near me. Just luck I guess. They don't need to stinking probable cause but I've been told they will take off their black soled boots if asked. They enforce fishing, safety, boating regs along with search and rescue.

Same as the Warden Service. They can stop you on the water for no reason at all but do so all in the name of safety or fishing. Don't have your safety gear then all bets are off. If they approach you for a safety or fishing check and determine your S faced now you have other problems.

Can't say I agree with the policy but I can avoid the hassle by either: a) not being on the water or b) make sure my safety and fishing items are well covered. I still have a choice.

Apply the same argument to your second amendment rights.

...because sea tow is legal rape.
Dang, man! That hurts. I'm former Coast Guard enlisted and have owned aforesaid marine assistance towing and recovery business here in MA for the past thirteen years. I work my ass off to provide great service to my customers on the water in order to support my family.

I think we can agree though that reducing the CG's budget is a terrible idea.

How about, "Legal rape to non subscribers."

What percentage of the total budget is this cut.
I was trying to read through the USCG FY 2017 report and the money spent on new ice breaker and some air craft but I didn't really get total figure.

If I could own a franchise, I would LOL.....

I have a friend who lost power off the cape and called SeaTow. The guy covering had to "take his mother to the hospital" and said "call the coastguard".

Needless to say, my friend is new to the ways of the sea, and a bit of a moron and didn't call the coastguard. He instead managed to anchor the boat to a rock jetty during high tide on a rough night- I should also mention he was drinking with friends. The boat was mostly recovered in the morning, my friend was among the missing and presumed dead after his cell phone got wet (along with everybody else's) when trying to anchor the boat- He was sleeping off his hangover with aforementioned friends on shore.

So yeah, all that money to Seatow, and the one time it was needed...

Interesting events. When did this happen?

I documented my boat with the CG as I was told it was more up front, but no yearly fee. Then they changed the rules and now I need to pay every year. Just like "lifetime ltcs" lol Hope he bleeds those sobs dry.

Wishes like that have consequences. If he "bleeds those sobs dry", I would sell that boat you own, and never set out on the ocean again. Actually, I don't anymore anyway, so good luck with that.

That's a little overly dramatic don't you think?

Calling their searches legal simply bc of a 1949 law is about as even handed as calling customs checkpoints 100 miles from the border legal: Neither one would survive a Fourth Amendment scrutiny from a sane SCOTUS.

The CG has its uses but they would be better served in the search & rescue function than their currently deployed mission. IMNSHO

This is something I 100% agree with you about. Let me make something clear, I retired because I did not like the direction of the service. I was a SAR specialist, and to quote your "IMNSHO", a really friggen good one. I was certified to do LE, but did not enjoy it. And no, I don't believe I was being overly dramatic. If there is no CG, I would own no ocean going vessel. Period.

The RNLI is a great model of what the CG small boat units SHOULD be......

Ok. I see my non-member rates as very carefully calculated fees necessary to provide a high level of customer service. Not arrived at lightly.

Weren't we talking about the Coast Guard? [grin]

I think I'll go to the range today.

Isn't the ocean just one giant range? All you need is to find an old buoy nobody will miss...

I have BoatUS. I'd like to see the towing companies offer a deal to non-members for their first tow or soft ungrounding. Pay 75% of the usual fee plus the yearly subscription rate and become a member.

This would soften the blow but not be such a good deal that boaters would risk not having towing coverage in the first place.

Some do offer this, but on a case by case basis. It's NOT going to happen on July 4th weekend!

My old man was in the Coast Guard, so I always have a soft spot for them.

Unsurprisingly, I think Coastie Ron has the right take on this, and I think it's very typical of the problems with big government we have today. The USCG has a legitimate and critical role to play but, unfortunately, they're way off that mission because of political bullshit.

Cutting $1.3bn from their budget is probably a completely reasonable thing to do - if you remove all responsibility for drug enforcement, a function which they shouldn't be performing anyway. Of course the government won't relieve them of those responsibilities, though, so it's going to impact the very legitimate role they play.

We waste so much of our defense spending while they're also talking about increasing defense spending but, hey, let's cut the budget of the USCG which actually delivers some ****ing value to taxpayers. The reason is that they don't necessarily need bleeding edge technology, which means less money to funnel to everyone's favorite defense contractors. Total bullshit.

Because keeping a vessel in tip top shape is so inexpensive. [rofl] How long does it take the average person to realize that buying the boat is the cheap part. [rolleyes]

But they won't. They'll take the money away from lifeboat stations to keep funding the sexy missions. SAR is at the very end of the funding chain. When times get lean, SAR dogs get left in our cages and fed scraps. When someone finally dies, they'll increase funding and resources a fraction of a percent so they can say they fixed the problem.

I see under Strategic Focus where they have Cyber Security. I am really, isn't there a military command under INSCOM for that.

When I was a kid (40 years ago) the Coast Guard used to give people free tows and do radio checks. Now they act like state troopers on the water. I'd be happy to see them eliminated completely, along with the majority of government agencies.

What area and when were you boarded by the Coast Guard? What, in particular, did they do when they boarded you that gives you that impression?

At least the Maine Warden Service deploys their fenders. Didn't see any in use from the CG on that boarding. RIB or not, it's all about respecting someone else's boat.

They were very nice/respectful when we were boarded the first year we had the boat. Whether they should be able to board without a specific concern is another question, but with the current state of affairs I could not ask for much more from them.
