I am at the point of not wanting to always throw my pistol in the trunk when I'm in another state. Connecticut resident but looking to expand to mass, New York, Pennsylvania North and maybe some others. Does anybody have any recommendations for a good multi-state class in the Springfield area or in Connecticut Hartford area?

For NY, you ain't getting SHIT LOL. NY permit = you need to be a resident, live in a town for at least 6 months [town dependent - some want you to be there at least 2 years, and be able to provide 4 character references attesting you are not a serial killer or a questionable shady guy. 4 references must all live in the town you live in NY and can't be related to you). NY permit may also take more than a year and half to process. Moot point cause you don't live in NY so no permit for you.

PA is easy - just go to a town sheriff's office pay em $20 and they mail you a permit in a week and a half.

Your CT permit means you needed to take the NRA basic class - that should work for MA, but I'm not sure if the recent rules changed.

MA you need to pay $100 a year for the privilege of being armed while in MA.

My advice is when traveling through states like NY where you don't have a permit, just print out a copy of FOPA and highlight the bit where it says you can legally transport an unloaded gun in your trunk, locked up, as long as you have no intent of ever stopping in the state. You still might get arrested cause reasons.

PA has no training requirement. You used to have to apply in person, but my last application (2021) was processed via mail and then I had to travel to the county sheriff's office for the picture and print out of the license. There is also no such thing as a non resident permit in PA. The only real discretion the sheriff has is whether or not he will issue to non county residents.

Technically there is no renewal, you apply each time your permit expires. In my case the county I originally got my permit through stopped issuing to non county residents, so I switched to a different county. The sheriff's website will state if they will accept applications via mail or require in person and if they will issue to non county residents.

It's a same day issuance and as long as your record check comes back clean, you're good to go. They will print the license while you wait.

I used Wyoming County in 2021 as it was the closest county to me that would issue to non county residents. Since I was in eastern MA, for you it might also be the closest county.

Rhode Island doesn't require a class, but does require a range test. It's easy and there are some people on the forum that are certified to sign off on that. Other than that, it's a matter of following the somewhat convoluted paperwork process. Which varies from city to city even though it's not supposed to. I used Cranston which wants a lot of the paperwork notarized, but is otherwise not bad. You can apply by mail, then have to show up in person to get the picture taken and the permit printed.

Unless it changed in the past year ...

You apply online.
2 or 3 days later are told to book an appointment because the license is ready.
You go to the Sheriff office.
Pay whatever it costs.
They print it on the spot.
Walk out with your license.

FL is very similar, but they mail it, takes a couple of weeks to arrive.

I recommend everyone that goes on vacation to FL do it. It takes 15 minutes. Show up, do prints, laugh at how stupid the MA process is, take a pic, laugh again, walk out. Not bad for a State with low IQ.

MA requires a course and it only counts if it is taught my a MA certified instructor. If the course is valid in MA, the instructor will know what you are talking about when you ask.

I did it thru Washington, PA while visiting in business figured I'd stop by. No appt needed they processed it in under 8 min and I got mine in the mail a week and half later. Just had to show up in person to pay the $20 and fill out the app but the card comes in the mail at least as of half year ago.

Would you recommend a certain business or instructor? Springfield and outer thirty miles or so area.

My contacts for that sort of thins are in Eastern and SE MA. Ask at any gunshop - they will have recommendations or in many cases are affiliated with an entity offering courses.

Did my NRA basic pistol class at Hamilton Rod & Gun Club over in Sturbridge. Full Saturday event and it was good enough for both MA and CT. I think the instructor last name was Bordeaux. You could take the class in CT but like someone said, better in MA so it's by a MA certified instructor and class so you can get both permits anyway.

Thanks, I am just looking to avoid dying in the Boston area. I will try SE area

New York changed their resident requirement earlier this year. Non residents can now apply for a license in NY. It is still expensive, difficult and will take a long time but it can be done. If you are licensed in NYC your license is good state-wide, but a non-NYC license is still not valid in NYC.

That's awesome they're letting a lil loose on their gun restrictions. As I have zero intent on ever visiting NY state, but may pass thru, would they still cuff and prosecute me for having an unloaded, locked pistol in my trunk and disregard SAFE?

They would if you had a separate locked case with ammunition in the trunk as well. Under NY law ammunition "in proximity" to a firearm = a loaded gun, even if the gun is not actually loaded.
Here's another great NYS law to be aware of. If you are in a vehicle or a home where an unlicensed firearm is discovered then ALL people in the vehicle or the home at the time the firearm was discovered can be charged with illegal possession, even if they were unaware that there was an unlicensed firearm present.
