Pistol found in backpack at daycare

I have a hard time understanding how one negligently places a firearm in a child’s backpack. Completely different bags than regular backpacks. How the Hell does one mix up bags and not notice when packing the child’s other belongings into the bag.
Exactly.
While I wouldn't put a loaded firearm in any backpack (I carry on my person), I can understand that someone might do this with a backpack they use themselves. So I can see how a gun might be left in a backpack and found by the TSA. But this is a kids daycare pack, you just don't put a gun in it. Not ever, not for a second. It's a simple rule, follow it and this "mistake" can't happen.

You two clearly have a lack of imagination. I can think of tons of ways a father getting a kid to daycare before work encounters a situation where he needs to have a baby bag open and might want to or have to remove his firearm and stow it somewhere.

Hmmm...Diapers, check, baby bottle, check , loaded gun, check, snack, check...….

Oh yes, please enlighten us.

Mistakes happen when you don't take proper precautions. I think it's a basic precaution that you don't put a loaded firearm into you kids daycare bag. No exceptions.

Here two:

Dad is driving to daycare, child vomits or has the old poop up the back. Dad stops in a busy place to clean up child. He does this leaning into car and is carrying IWB on his back. Because he lives in a state where people are giant pussies, he pulls the gun off so people walking by don't see it while hes bent over in the car cleaning up poop or vomit. He puts it in the most convenient place, the bag hes digging through for wipes and spare kid clothes. After spending 15min doing this hes late and in his rush to get kid to daycare and get to work ontime he forgets the gun.

Second random situation. Hes on the way to daycare but has to go into a post office. He can't bring his gun in there becuase hes a law abiding gun owner. Hes getting child out to carry him in the post office because hes a responsible parent who doesn't leave babies in cars unattended. He places the gun in the closest thing to the car seat while getting the baby out, the backpack. He has to wait in line at the post office, his kid is upset and screaming the whole time. He gets back in car and because of calming the kid he forgets the gun was in the bag.

How many more innocuous situations where children distract parents would you like me to post? Because babies/toddlers have thousands of ways of making parents forget things. I have three kids, any idea how many times I've burnt dinner because a kid puked or pooped all over the place, or was screaming bloody murder for little to no reason?

Do we crucify people to the same degree when there is a traffic violation that COULD have been fatal if the stars/moon/sun alligned JUST RIGHT but NO ONE was injured and no property damage occurred?

Of course not
If you haven't noticed there are different levels of punishment for different types of traffic violations. Even within speeding it can vary from a small ticket all the way to driving to endanger (actual jail time), it depends on the potential for injury.

Traffic violation and putting a loaded handgun in a toddlers backpack......seems not to be equivalent? The guy is a frigging MORAN, and deserves what is handed out to him. Keep defending shitbrains like him...it make us all look good.

I'll keep defending him with no issue while you sit over there playing statist.

All your examples have him choosing to put the gun in the daycare bag. That's the stupid, unacceptable part. It's a deliberate act. An accident implies circumstances beyond your control, at most an inaction.

DUI/OWI? Absolutely.

Guys, I'm not disagreeing with points you've both made.

What I'm saying is that people make mistakes ALL THE TIME that are far more severe than this and society doesnt levy similar punishments

42!....I'd be more inclined to agree with your response if this had been willful which there's no indication there wasnt.......its not like driving 50 over the limit which takes a concious decision to do

Every indication is that this was an accidental flub...no harm no foul.......and for what its worth I think any of us or the state would be hard pressed to punish this father more than he's been punished so far with public humiliation and guilt for his mistake

Not sure I am interested in living in a society that is so authoritarian that we punish people for every mistake regardless of severity and outcomes......but if we let these authoritarians go down this road its only a matter of years before everyone has a personal AI monitoring everything they do and reporting it to popo for prosecution

So much for freedom
The willful act was him choosing to put the gun in the bag.

And the willful act here was choosing to get drunk and choosing to drive.

Choices have consequences.

I don't think either of those situations should involve government unless someone actually is harmed.

Apparently you feel government should be allowed to deny your rights and take your children over the literal one time misplacement of an inanimate object that resulted in zero harm.

Where in the article posted does it say he intentionally put it into the backpack destined for daycare?

Its doesnt

I think people are being more than a little crazy about this.

Would everyone lose their minds if it were a knife?

You're right, SOMEONE intentionally put it in the backpack intended for daycare. I am assuming it was the person who delivered it to the daycare, who owns the gun, who dropped off the kid.

And if he had put a knife in I would still be calling it unacceptable and him stupid. Heck, if it was a hammer I'd be saying that. The resulting consequences would be different but he'd still be stupid.

A little tired of the false comparisons, just because one person or group does something wrong it does not make it ok for another group or person to do something wrong. Saying it is is infantile logic.

The question is do the cops get the same punishment when they make equivalent or worse mistakes? What happened to the cop who left his M4 on the roof and drove off? If he wasn't punished then don't throw the book at civilians.

I'm sick of corrupt and incompetent governments telling us we can't make mistakes.

Hard to say since we know little about it. Maybe the kid took the wrong bag, maybe the kid has a camo bag like dad, maybe mom is trying to frame dad. Who knows. It's my town so I'll keep my ear to the ground, lol.

Drunk drivers should be locked up. My dead cousin would agree, she was killed by one on his 4th offence. If he had been locked up she would be alive today. Choose to drink and drive, face the consequences.

So true. Why must everything involve the government now?

So you're saying the guy just lost track of his loaded gun? Ya, sure, still his fault.

And yes, everyone should be held responsible to the same level, no one is disputing that. But it's not an excuse.

That's your personal situation being used to support invasive laws. I'm sorry you lost a relative, but giving the government the power to kidnap over an arbitrary level of consumption is ridiculous

Why are you insistent that this was an intentional act?

If we hammer people in a manner consistent with what you're advocating where no harm to person/property was involved then you better plunk down a lot more money for prisons and robotic guards because no one will be left on the outside let alone anyone able to run the prisons.....

In a socialist utopia, everyone is a criminal. It's the best way to control your subjects, make them all criminals subject to arrest at any time.

Why are you insistent that this was an intentional act?

Either it was put there or it magically appeared there. I don't believe it magically appeared there. I'm will to listen to any explanation that it got there without someone putting it there.

Someone probably unintentionally put it in the bag by accident. Don't think it can be said any clearer.

But hey, let's not stop that from ruining an entire family's worth of lives right? I mean destroying a family and running someone through the MA gunnlegal system is totally proportional response to leaving an object inadvertently bag right?

Someone deliberately put it in the bag, explain how someone puts in in the bag without meaning to put it in the bag? Logically impossible unless you believe a person's body can be magically used to carry out an action without the person knowing it.

They may not have intended to leave it there.
They may not have intended for it to be found.
But they definitely intended to put it there. That was the choice. That was the negligent act.

As someone with a DUI on their record from the 90’s, I agree. DUI is a real, actual public safety risk and is inexcusable. (I don’t remember getting in the car that night I did it, let alone behind the wheel, but there is zero excuse I can make for it. Fortunately the car I was driving, a fence, and a utility pole were the only innocent fatalities)

You've never put anything in the wrong drawer, wrong backpack, wrong pocket? That's impressive.

You're assuming his bag was a Pokémon backpack, maybe it was just a regular backpack and dad mistook it for his own. Or kid took the wrong backpack. He could be 5 and grabs his own backpack. Mornings with little kids are crazy hectic. Mistakes are made.
