You're talking about the first incident, not the second allegation.

Signal as a platform is not the issue. It shouldn't be used for TS/SCI (or probably even S/NOFORN), but like all communication platforms it's only as secure as the person using it, and those they invite in.

Inviting in people not cleared for access was the problem in the first incident (even if it was the fault of Waltz's assistant). In the second allegation, it's all on Hegseth for discussing sensitive information with people with neither clearance nor need to know.

I got out of the intel game in 2001, when I left the army. Back then, SIPRNET was all we had; it was pre-smartphone, and the "culture of texting" didn't exist yet.

Does anyone here know whether there's a truly classified version of SMS, for use in situations like these? Like, when coworkers in SCIFs have to exchange routine work info (which is probably classified by its very nature), can they at least do it on a secure chat app through SIPRNET?

If there's no capability like that, it's understandable that folks will mess up and just use nonsecure means. It's wrong, but it's understandable.
