What do you think the odds are this will turn out to be a semi-auto rifle?

NEW YORK (AP) -- A man fired a machine gun into the air Monday as he walked along streets in a commercial area and was shot by police after he wouldn't drop the weapon, witnesses said. No other injuries were reported.

"It was just pow, pow, pow, pow, pow," said Vincent Ho, who was at a dentist's office and said he heard at least seven shots.

Shoppers and commuters on the busy strip in the Jamaica section of the borough of Queens scrambled for cover.

Police, who received several 911 calls, said they confronted the gunman around 5:45 p.m. in an area crowded with shops and medical offices. The gunman was shot in a parking lot behind a row of stores after an exchange of gunfire and was taken to a hospital, police said. His condition wasn't immediately disclosed.

Three people who had been walking with the man were taken into custody, and the machine gun was recovered in the parking lot, police said.

When I hear machine gun I think of a decently large belt fed gun that typically requires a bi-pod to shoot.

I don't see how anyone could count the shots from a machine gun. Just the fact that someone was able to say how many shots there heard would tell me it wasn't a machine gun.

Exactly... But that wouldn't make for a very good media story. They have to make the gun as evil and baby killing as possible...

That kind of writing by journalists always annoys the hell out of me... that, and when they say "high-powered rifle" (which they almost always use when it's a .22). As opposed to what, an air rifle? Hell, you can even hunt with those!

If a .22 is "high-powered" what would they say about my Springfield 1903 [smile] ?

"Extra super mega high powered"

"Assault rifle". I mean, my G-d! It can hold FIVE rounds of MILITARY, PEOPLE-KILLING AMMUNITION!!! It can mount a BAYONET!! It's EEEEE-VIL!

Sorry... got carried away there. Used to work on the college newspaper. [wink] But I always washed my hands afterwards!! Honest!

It gets more interesting...

Cops Shoot Man Firing Machine Gun

2006_11_machinegun.jpgA man firing a .45 caliber machine pistol was shot by police in Jamaica, Queens. After receiving 911 calls about a man firing a gun at 179th Street and Hillside Avenue, police had chased the 33 year old man four blocks. A nearby office worker Ron Karo told the NY Times, "I looked out the window, and I saw two cops shooting a black man...He was going up and down. I never saw him shooting at the cops."

The police shot the man in the left eye; he is in serious condition at Mary Immaculate Hospital. No other people were injured. The police found the gun "equipped with a silencer and an extended magazine to hold more bullets" and say the shooter had a record of prior arrests involving illegal and loaded weapons. Three other men, who may have been with the shooter earlier, were taken into custody.

Looks like an awful small silencer for a MAC-10

(Note: at first I thought the attached picture might have been a generic stock photo, but a NYP link claims "The maniac was firing this weapon").

Something sounds fishy here...

if he could count 7 shots, it sure as hell wasn't amachine gun.
probably an crosman 1077 12 shot air rifle

More info:

"Police say a .45 caliber machine gun with a silencer with a capacity to hold 32 rounds was being fired down Hillside Avenue around 6 p.m. Monday night, the height of evening rush hour.

--snip--

Meanwhile, we understand that 25 bullets were left in the machine gun, which means the causalities could have been far worse. The gunman is expected to survive to face charges. "

The police are calling it a machine gun. It either is a machine gun or the police are mistaken. Can't really lay this one on the press fellas.

Witnesses HEARD shots from a gun with a SILENCER?!?! Am I the only one who finds this assertion absurd?

I'm betting on a semi-auto MAC or Cobray with a fake silencer, the kind sold for impressing the drive-by crowd.

I don't mean to be defensive here

But as you can tell from my alias, I'm a news guy.

30 years in the trenches.

While I agree that many journalists are biased, I believe the biggest problem is simply that most of them are ignorant morons.

There is an old saying that journalists are a mile wide and an inch deep.

It's pretty much true.

If the cops tell the typical reporter it is a machine gun, then that is what they will write. The same thing with assault weapons. The real issue here is not the journalists, but the cops who have an agenda.

The reporters are simply just too dumb to question it. The leftists are just better at leading them by the nose.

I'm a pilot and what gets me even more crazed is coverage of a crash and you read and hear stories about how the plane "stalled" on takeoff and the story is written to say "the engine stalled" because the reporter a. made an assumption and b. is too lazy to learn enough about aviation to know the difference.

You can apply this laziness and ignorance to just about any story you read or hear. Be especially careful about stories having anything to do with economics.

The left has accomplished its goal of under-educating the populace to be totally ignorant of history, economics, finance, politics and anything else. Therefore, what you have today is an ignorant media dictacting to an ignorant populace the drivel spewed out by their socialist handlers.

It is the perfect storm and we are living it today in Massachusetts. This is a left-wing wet dream....Dullards who can be duped into going to the polls like zombes and voting for communists.

As much as I would like to agree that the media is in league with the enemy, it is not a conscious arrangement.

It is simply a natural result of three generations of brain-washed, under-educated children who cannot and will not think for themselves. The communists controlled teachers union, in conjunction with the democrat party, have seen to that.

They really do believe they are right because they have no frame of reference.

I'm through with my rant now. It feels good to get it out.

I hope I haven't offended any leftists, teacher's union members or anyone else.

Sort of

Agreed - to a point. There are some pretty darn ignorant cops out there. Ask the members at Ames who heard a statie come in to lecture them about gun laws, and were told that it's OK to have an AR on the seat next to you in the car if it has a trigger lock, and that the storage requirements are different between an LTC-A and LTC-B. [rolleyes]

And if it's not a commercial jet, the plane was a Cessna.......

I beg to differ. I believe the MSM has a distinct agenda, as shown by its obvious bias in any firearms story. In short, its collective ignorance of firearms is exceeded only by its hatred of them - and those who own them.

Apparently you didn't read my post, Keith. I noticed that too, which is why I highlighted the parts I did. Guess I was being too subtle for the audience.

Update...

"UZI MAN"! [rolleyes]

'UZI' MAN WAS OUT TO GET SIS PAL: COPS

November 15, 2006 -- The gun-toting man who was shot by cops on a Queens street Monday was on his way to shoot his sister's ex-boyfriend, authorities said yesterday.

Patrick Ledger, 33, of Brooklyn, was allegedly going to settle a score with his sister's former flame when he was shot at 5:45 p.m. on Monday, police sources said.

Ledger, who has been arrested 13 times, began firing a semi-automatic Masterpiece Arms handgun, designed to look like an Uzi, on 178th Street near Hillside Avenue in Jamaica, authorities said.

Masterpiece Arms (never heard of 'em). Looks like they sell a real quality product...

[rofl]

As Ledger rounded the corner in search of his target, he muttered to himself and let out yet another .45-caliber round, police said. At least 13 people called 911 after hearing the gunfire.

Cops encountered Ledger on Hillside Avenue and chased him around a White Castle and down an alley into a parking lot, authorities said.

Ledger allegedly pointed the gun, equipped with a silencer and 30 rounds of bullets, at the officers and began to "pull the top lever of this weapon, trying to put a round, we believe, in the chamber. He had difficulty operating the weapon," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, adding that he may have inadvertently flipped on the safety lock.

When he refused to drop the gun the cops shot Ledger in the left eye.

He was rushed to Mary Immaculate Hospital, where he was in serious condition.

What utter drivel. The "machine gun" is a mere semi; the gun is an "Uzi" clone only to the blind; and my bet is that the "silencer" is as bogus as the rest of this story. Note the absence of any visible ports for all the gas that a real silencer would collect and suppress. [rolleyes]

You really expect the mass media press to report to the same level of accuracy as the firearm's press? Keep dreaming. These people can't ever get it right. Don't think for a second that what they are reporting in the press is automatically what they were told. I've dealt with the press for years during my tenure in LE and was surprised when they even got my name right.

You can split hairs here all day and night. The fact was this idiot was shooting a 45 ACP pistol in the air. In mid town Manhatten chances are pretty good that a few rounds will find their way into the surrounding apartment building.

No loss getting him off the street.
