Just put together a pot of split pea and ham soup. The smell of it simmering is killing me here, Mmmmmmmmmmmm!
Have the day off today and thought I'd surprise the wife with it when she gets home from work.
Anyone else like Pea Soup?
BTW: I hate eating peas unless they're sugarsnaps or snowpeas. The taste of regular peas is so yucky.

OMG I LOVE pea soup!

My mom always makes up a BIG batch after Easter. Lots of ham and oh so full of creamy goodness!!

Damn you Jon you are making me hungry now!

Y'all have just screwed up. (Unless you REALLY like pea soup.)

Guess what we'll have when we do a camp out? Yup, homemade pea soup. The XYL loves it, and I don't eat but a little of it.

I like it, but, it doesn't always like me.

XYL???? You a ham too Nickle?

One of the great soups, pea. No ham in the house, so yesterday I made a kettle of corn chowder using a few ears of late corn from a local farm.
In all humility, I must pronounce it excellent. :D

Not a ham, just a LOT of involvement in the OLD CB culture, back when you HAD to use call signs (not a "handle") and they actually did "Jamborees. My father was an Avionics Tech in WW2, and a love of radio never left him.

LOVE pea soup. Went into the mess hall one time while in the Army. Pea soup on the menu. Went back for seconds. Mess Sgt. said " You like this?" I said it was delicious. Had a new buddy.

You want the recipe for the way THEY make it?

Well, it's thickening up and I just stripped the bone off. I tasted it and Ohhhhhhhhhhh it's Soooooooooooooooooooo GOOD!!!!

Yum, I love pea soup. You didn't make the any homemade bread? For shame.

No, I didn't [cry]
I'll ya what though, when I do a beef stew in the Crock Pot, I usually pick up a bread mix and throw it into the machine. Timed so that the bread comes out just before dinner. Warm and soft.

Not to highjack your pea soup thread Jon, however, has anyone tried the Pillsbury corn bread biscuts? Ohmygod...they would go great with your pea soup. Hell...they'd go great with anything.

I like Pillsbury stuff but all of their stuff has that distictive "Pillsbury" taste. Do these? Everyone in this house loves cornbread. I use the real cheap and easy Jiffy Mix in a box. Years ago, I made it from scratch with real cornmeal. Used to get it at the grist mill in Sandwich.
Real stone ground cornmeal, I can smell the Indian Pudding now Mmmmmm

Oooohhhhh.....i *LOVE* Indian pudding...nice and hot with a scoop of vanilla ice cream melting all over the place.... <sigh> But, to answer your question - no they don't have that taste. They really aren't bad. It's not like real corn bread, it's more like corn bread flavored biscuts. Try them and tell me what you think. Course, REAL corn bread has no comparison if you have the time to make it, but they're pretty good in a pinch. :D

Thanks for the tip Lynne. We'll have to ry 'em out.
BTW: Went to Mom's and got the Kale soup. She threw in some fresh bread pudding too.
All this food talk, we're gonna be known as Northeast Eaters!

<groan> I love that too. How about grape nut custard? My grandmother (may she rest in pease) used to make THE best. I'm starting to salivate on my keyboard....

Go ahead... Rub it in!

Well, you can always do like I just did nad throw a pound or so of dried peas into a pot of water and chopped up some left over ham. It'll take a while, but that just gives you the time you need to let the bread dough rise. :D :D :D

Went to the local diner last night, and had Jalapeno/Sweet Potato Soup. The cook made up some just for us. Looks like I'll have to bring back some 'shine from Arkansas for him.

Now, that's living.

Oh ya, I make a mean Grape Nut custard. I sometimes make Portuguese sweet rice (rice pudding).

Nickel: I am not sure of the exact procedure but I suspect they cooked it in one of those floor mounted drydocks that seemed to be used for all types of "add water" cooking. Good thing this is a family show otherwise I'd relate a story about baked chicken for the officers mess.
