PBS poll on gun control

The 90% number is real. But the question is incomplete so you get bad answers.

It's like if you asked "Do you breathe", you will get 90%+ "Yes".
When you ask the rest of the question: "Do you breathe underwater" you will get very different results.

The VAST majority of people, around 90% will answer "yes" to "do you want background checks" but when they find out what background checks entail, what it means in context, how much it will cost, with an understanding of gun registries, inconveniences, the fact that many places already have months long processes to buy guns, that the gun show loophole is a bunch of crock, and the rest, they answer the question very differently.
