Patterning My Beretta 1201/Questions

I took my new (to me) Beretta 1201 out today to check the patterns. I fired three rounds of Federal Tactical 00 Buck at 7, 15, and 20 yards each. I then fired four Federal Tactical Slugs at 15 yards.

At 7 yards the pattern was very tight, right at my POA. It opened up a bit at 15 yards but still seemed to place all pellets on target. At 20 yards the pattern drifted to the right a bit but still kept all pellets on the target.

The four slugs grouped well although a bit high and slightly left. At first I thought the first slug hit the center of the target because I had two roughly 12 gauge holes from the first shot. The center hole had (mostly) very sharp edges, almost as if it were made by a wadcutter bullet.

My biggest question is this. Should I adjust the sights to get the slugs on target at 15-25 yards and use "Kentucky windage" for the buckshot?

I am open to learning how to get this SG on target and working best for me.

Yours WORKS!?!?

I've got a pre-ban 1201 FP (the vertical pistol grip stock that increases both velocity AND firepower!), but it will NOT cycle. Forget short brass; even MEDIUM brass loads don't cycle the bolt or stovepipe.

What are you feeding yours?

TYPE01313,

Just wanted to say nice looking gun.

Thanks, it does have some nice lines.

Scrivener,

What are you feeding yours?

Federal Tactical/Classic (reduced recoil) loads. They seem to work very well and don't hurt my shoulder. I also have some Estate SWAT loads which I want to try.

Frosty,

Did you only shoot once at 20 yards? Are you using a rifled slug barrel? If you're not using a rifled slug barrel I would get one for the slugs. If you are, I would get a second smooth barrel for the buck shot and put in a full choke on the barrel. That will get that group a bit tighter at 20 yards and will allow you to adjust the sights a bit easier on that barrel.

But if you don't have two barrels for it, I would get a second one.

Derek,

It may have gotten lost in the details but I shot four slugs at 15 yards (look at the four holes just above the big orange square in the bottom picture) and three buckshot rounds at each of the other ranges.

I am not sure about changing the barrel on a Beretta. That's one of the reasons the Remington 870 may be a better all-around SG.

Ahh I didn't even see the slug target at the bottom. I always use a slug barrel for slugs and a shot barrel for bb's. I can't imagine the barrel change would be that difficult on that SG.

The good thing is if the bird is flying left to right, you don't need to lead it. [lol]
