Park Rangers stabbed in Boston Common

Other than stolen goods, why the hate for other commercial exchanges of goods or services?

I don't know, something about criminal activity by shady people and their tendency to kill one another or commit crimes of opportunity against the general public hampers my enjoyment of our public parks. Trying to simply throw my trash into a trash can which someone just hid a stolen gun under or is using to make a drug drop and getting the stink eye from thuggy mcthugpants & the thugglebunch or twichy tweakers is just wrong. Don't like little kids having to deal with perverts lurking about, random homeless guys openly masturbating, pissing, or pooping in the open, needles discarded or in the arm of a passed out junkie, or aggressive panhandlers looking for just enough cash for a hit from their dealer two benches over either. Having a police presence to broom those freaks out of broad daylight is a major quality of life improvement for those of us that want to use parkland like normal law abiding people.

Menino's policy of allowing vagrants to illegal camp out in public parks and libraries horribly undermined the quality of those spaces to the general public, whom only wants to use those places for their intended purposes without the One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest/Clockwork Orange bullshit. Walsh thusfar has continued this hands off policy.

/continue rant broken window theory treatment of public spaces and how allowing anti-social criminal shit to happen with indifference ruins everything

You failed to actually answer my question.
I will agree with the majority of ills you stated - public spaces should be free from patently dangerous or offensive behavior. However, other than stolen goods if drugs and prostitution were legal there would be no need to transact in the park with shady characters. Government creates a problem then offers more of itself as the solution.

Sadly, even if a citizen had the means to present lethal force to protect those Rangers, they would be hard pressed to do so given the political climate in MA. That said, I might have had a hard time just standing there and filming.

I thought that in my head too. That mofo is awfully close to me, and if I whipped out my phone and started recording - I'd be a bit more discreet and give myself some distance. Person recording is right on top of the perp!

If you were carrying - would you step in? Reports are that the Rangers pepper sprayed the man first which was ineffective and then you see in the video, they have their ASPs deployed. After the perp did his deed, chucked the knife into the pond and civ's subdued him until PD showed up. Lethal force by a civ justified during the act? I would say so from the video - but boy, I wouldn't want to have any collateral damage. (See the Trooper in Norwalk, CT ricochet a passenger on the coach bus going to/from the casino?)

There is no such thing as Dcr Police. So if you are going to agitate at least be accurate.

Are you sure? I could have sworn I saw a truck with dcr and either police/ranger or something similar not to long ago. It was some sort of dress and act like a Leo.. but not really group

If you're going to have people running around public spaces dressed like cops and enforcing regulations, you need to arm them for their own defense. It's that simple.
1. They chose that job

If this were any other NES thread, people would be coming out of the woodwork screaming "You're blaming the victim!"
Please, prove me wrong. Tell me that if they get guns, they won't get additional power and if they get additional power, they won't abuse it.

This is where your logic jumps without merit. Your slippery slope argument relies on a great deal of attenuated speculation.

This is NES. Since when do we let accuracy and facts get in the way of a good ol' "**** Authority" thread?

And the Boston Muni's were disbanded and merged into BPD over a decade ago.

Full video of the attack...anyone would have been justified in shooting the guy...

You or I would think so , but it's not up to us.
How long did that kid who shot the guy stabbing the doctor get jacked around for?
And how much I wonder did he have to dole out for Lawyers fees through all that?
Personally I might have pulled, but there would be a moment of hesitation there.

I've worked in boston for almost 5 years and had no idea park rangers even existed. Which boston parks necessitate a ranger? Perhaps I am missing something.

also I am thoroughly confused about how anyone could be stabbed....I thought becoming Boston Strong would protect us. Guess I shouldnt have paid $30 for that T-shirt.

Except there wasn't clear video of the hospital stabbing.

What would have happened if a CCer would have saved the park rangers?
go to prison or get sued, it would not be the first time. No self help means no self help.

This just enforces the apathy towards cops, honestly.

1. If I help you, I get in trouble.
2. If I don't help you, I can go about my business.

I'll take Option#2, thank you very much. And they have nobody to blame but themselves, honestly. Sad state of affairs, but there it is....

Silver lining is that they'll both live. No need to die because some deranged person starts freaking out and stabbing folks...

No, there wasn't, but there also was absolutely no reason for them to keep Langone on the hook for anything more than maybe a week, tops. It doesn't get much simpler than what happened there. The DA was just being a douchebag, probably annoyed that they couldn't find someone to prosecute. [rolleyes]

I got pulled over by one in Charlestown after picking up my fiance from nursing school. I thought they were real cops until I saw their clothing. But he did say I'm a park ranger etc and asked me for my license and registration. I rolled through a stop sign on their precious Navy Yard corner. [rolleyes] [rofl] Why do they exist???

how the F is the average citizen supposed to determine the difference in powers between all the different uniforms? I agree with the poster who said boil it down to city/local cops and state police and simplify.

there's no point to having all these branches in all different uniforms with different powers and equipment.

and it seems objectively clear that whichever agency is responsible for making the commons safes they are doing a piss poor job at it. not sure there is any reasonable excuse either. solve the problem or step aside and let someone else take a shot. but solve it, don't ignore it and make excuses. don't really understand why the Leo community is not held to a performance standard like the rest of working America.

Another form of welfare. That's why they exist

No seriously, why are they there? I rolled maybe 2mph to take at the right a stop sign (Right only anyways). I saw the lights and I was like WTF did I do? Better face me than my girl who sat in class for 11 hours for sure. Good luck officer LOL.

He was a good dude though. Black guy maybe 24. Not that it matters.

Lucky. I had my Glock ready and

Incorrect on the municipal police. We had one yell at our bpd detail (who had no idea who they where) just last year. They are the be all and end all (according to them) of the seaport area and the bpd isn't 'allowed' to work there

It sucks we should have to even think about jumping in to help in a case like this.
Do I help and take this risk of being bankrupt and my family homeless or just keep walking?
I know what the right thing to do is. But I have more than myself to worry about.
Thanks Martha .

Well there are a whole group of people with police cars and uniforms who can tell bpd to miss off.. last year...

I can also tell you they are based out of the building at dry dock ave and tide st.....

Oh I forgot to add 'municipal protective service' to the list

Actually Boston Park Rangers (can't speak to DCR) are law enforcement and can make arrests and issue citations. There is seasonal staff that I'm not 100% sure about though. I can tell you factually the person that was severely injured does. He is one of my best friends and I can tell you there are a lot of tough situations they deal with.

Not bothering to read all the comments here, because it'll probably piss me off more than anything (knowing how NES goes). But I'll tell you this, he is a good guy, a tough SOB, and he (I can't say all Boston Park Rangers) works hard to keep people safe in the parks as much as the BPD. The debate of armed verse unarmed has been had and done by them, but because they also serve as ambassadors of Boston it was pushed aside. Who knows now. Same thing is going on right now with their horses, which are being largely funded through donations and not the city.

For any that give a sh!t about the person rather than the issue, he is doing well.
