Hi Rifle Comp Helpdesk!

Looking for some assistance in finding a source and target type for service rifle shooting.

I’d like to make better use of my exceedingly rare range trips by simulating CMP match style shooting with my M1 Garand. Right now I’m shooting at 100 yard sighting-in targets (the orange 1” grid ones for deer rifles) and it’s plain boring.

I have access to 100, 200 and 300 yard ranges (Harvard Sportsmens) but beyond the SR-1 target I’m not sure which to get and where. I’d also like to pick up a logbook that matches the targets to track my progress (if any!).

Thanks for steering me in the right direction, I’ll get out to the matches eventually.

What range are you most likely to shoot at? There are targets for every stage modified for every range. Keep in mind the full face targets are very large (48”+).

Creedmoor has all of the appropriate Highpower targets for actual distance or reduced distance. They will also have every other Highpower accessory you’ll likely need.

All of the matches at Reading Rifle are open to the public also.

Might look at CMPs offering of log books!
They caught my eye an are inexpensive.

Thanks for the info thus far. I’m looking at Creedmoor and CMP. None of the CMP targets look like they are for Highpower though. I went to National Target Co (or something like that anyway) and there were like 30+ targets to choose from. Gave me a stomachache so I came here as a shortcut

I’m thinking the 48” targets would be a bit unwieldy, so the smaller (22”) ones are where I will start. I’d probably shoot at 200 yards most of the time as the range is less busy and thus easier for me to fire from prone and seated positions.

Is there any value to shooting The “reduced” 600 yard target if I set it up at 100 or 200 yards? I mean, how much can I learn without true wind effect?

P.S. CMP Service Grade on order, I’ll post that up later in MilSurps.

For shooting from only the 200 yardline, you would need the SR target for offhand and sitting, the SR42 target for rapid fire prone, and the MR52 for slow fire prone.

There is MUCH you can learn using the reduced targets. You will be able to master the fundamentals and your shot process without the added variable of wind.

Any “off the rack” M1 is going to struggle at anything beyond 300 yards. It will not be competitive at 600 yards. It is why CMP Garand and games matches are not shot beyond 200 yards. It’s still an excellent way to get started though.

Thanks Dave. I’m shooting a tuned-up CMP Special grade, so I’m the weak link in the shooting system well before the rifle and ammo.

I will check out the SR, SR42 and MR52.

Appreciate your thoughts.

i assume your going to shoot "cmp games" matches with the Garand?
if so CMP uses the SR target for all positions and 100 and 200 yard only.
basically you want repair centers to save money and shipping cost.
I usually buy my SR centers at midway usa around my birthday for the discount and they go on sale from time to time.

you can also just draw up the correct size black bull for practice. You wi!l have to look up each target to see where the score rings stop for the black bull.
i only shoot 100 and 200 98% of the timee and I juzt use 6" and 13"
