Panera Bread anti gun?

My guess would be that Panera has little to do with making the decision as to what would be filtered. I am sure they buy the service through someone else who controls the filters. If you complain to Panera maybe it will get changed. Could be they aren't even aware of what exactly is filtered.

Almost certainly WRONG.

Internet filtering companies survive by offering extensive configuration choices, often by category - smut, sex education, drugs, hacking, anon proxy sites, warez sites, weapons related sites, etc. I suspect that Panera handles this on a corporate, not a per-store, basis as they all use the same filtering service. It's simple - Panera chose to filter firearms sites, and could easily choose to remove them from the filter configuration.

Some flavors you can't just re-create....my wife and I have tried so many times to re-create the creamy onion soup from the Outback....never happened. Sorry, drifting off topic.

Never made these, or had outback's soup, so who knows..

Why do these places bother blocking sites? I could see maybe porn, but how does it help their business in anyway to block other sites?

Oh, sure; inject a note of reason into a feeding frenzy. What a buzzkill.

I like to eat lunch there after the ISA action pistol matches.

Sorry. That's probably why I don't get invited to many parties.

As jasons said earlier, this is more likely the result of using the default content filter settings on their proxy server than any specific antigun intentions. The OP would probably have had the same result if he had tried to browse for the latest Christmas condoms on playboy.com.

Why are they blocking access to any sites at all? There's no need for them to do that.
For those of you that frequent that establishment be sure to check your firearms at the door and hand over your 'guns and ammo' magazines while your at it.

Are you serious? Do me a favor - research every single solitary company with any type of anti-gun policy in place and then get back to us with an honest assessment of how many of those companies and their products you avoid. Jesus Christ, the National Rifle Association doles out Leathermans and cheap Chinese crap and Tim Leatherman along with the Peoples Republic of China are not exactly beacons of gun friendliness. You can certainly choose not to patronize Panera Bread, because they dare exercise their right to operate their business and their free Wifi in a manner in which they choose. However, to suggest that any gun-toting, gun-loving American that chooses to munch a sammich and sip a latte at Panera, may as well check their guns in at the door, is not only ludicrous, it's just stupid...

and another thing take a look at the calorie counts for most their dish's in some cases you would be better of going to Mc'donalds.....

this is absolutely true! I have three female coworkers. You know the type, the trendy, "be healthy" type of hip girl. The type who is always on the leading edge of every fad and trend, and always uses the new buzz words to describe everything.

Well, one day at work they are sitting having lunch from Panera and I have some fries and a coke from McDonalds. We get talking about food and eventually, one of them asks me, "Have you tried Panera food?". I respond, "yes, I have, but I swore off it when I found out that my current lunch is better for me (pointing to fries and coke)". They start talking about how good the Panera food is for you and it is healthy and low fat blah blah blah.

I finally get pissed with it, walk over to the computer in the lunch room, pull up nutritional info, print it out and slap it in front of them. I say, "you keep eating THAT, and you will end up like this (pointing to my fat self)". They get all pissy and try to tell me the info is wrong. I figure these girls are lost for good, but later in the day I hear them saying how they need to find a new place to eat for lunch because "Panera is so bad for you, and we need to tell people".

Ugh, I hate stupid people. And I hate the trendy hipster health people who dont know what they are actually doing.

Back to being on topic, put flyers down for gunbroker.com on every table [smile][smile]

I have to go there, addicted to their cinnamon raisin bread, I cannot live without it.

That stings a little. Maybe I am stupid but my heart is in the right place. If they're censoring the wifi then they're treating us like babies. Screw that. There are dozens of other places to eat.
I agree, it would be impossible to boycott every anti gun establishment but when it's as easy as driving to a different sandwich shop then I'm all for it. We all talk a tough game but nobody wants to be inconvenienced in the process of fighting for our 2A rights.
That's why I go to Dick's for some of my non firearm related sporting products and that's why I would go to WalMart instead of Kohls if I needed something from one of those stores. At least their management has the balls to sell firearms and/or ammo.

Yesterday I went to the one in Burlington. I wore my shooting vest, the one with all the nra and shooting patches on it and my NRA hat. It was great just watching some of the reactions of the people there!! I did get waited on though and the sandwich lousy! No guns or ammo, all left in the free republic of NH! Well for a little while.

Once in a great while I visit Panera - they have some great sammies. They are not as good as they are expensive and primarily for that reason I don't go there often.

They have every right to block whatever they wish on their courtesy services, exactly as they have the right (if they so so chose) to excercise a gun-free policy. They have rights, too, even if the owners are a bunch of Ben & Jerries munching, Obama supporting, polar bear loving, tree hugging gun haters.

But I'm a [STRIKE]little[/STRIKE] lot disappointed that everyone is so quick to jump on a guy that chooses to exercise his own rights, just as Panera is exercising theirs and you are exercising yours.

Do you truely CARE where mk70ss eats or doesn't eat?

mk70ss, if you feel it would compromise your values to patronize them then you should stay away, AND let them know why. They may or may not care. It may or may not change. But that is part of the feedback and learning process a business uses.

I will continue to have an average of 1 sandwich a year (if that) there, but I will be thinking about this subject next time I am there.

Stick to your guns if that is what you believe.

Sorry man, but I don't think you're stupid...In fact, I think you're pretty goddamned smart. I'm not the brightest bulb on the hedge, but I'm capable of moments of smartness. I am also capable of moments of stupid...(I have them all the time). The "check your guns" statement was stupid. You are not...I should not type when it's late...Beers on me...[cheers]

Hmmmm, how about going to.....(drum roll).....

http://www.panerabread.com/about/contact/index2.php

And making a comment/complaint about your experience?

Such as:

I just sent them a message regarding my experience and that I will be finding a new place to eat/have coffee if their policy is in fact anti-firearms. I left my email, and am waiting their response. (if the corporate blows are allowed to respond......)

uhm.. how about your own kitchen??

Very well stated. If I want a good sandwich I'll make it myself. I like to eat so I can make three sandwiches for the price of one of theirs. I'm also not a fan of chain eateries. When our family eat outs it is at at an independently owned establishment(90% of time). Our family eats home and brings our lunches to school/work(95% of the time). If someone wants to spend their hard earned money at Panera Bread or some other overpriced eatery then so be it, this is still America. I understand some schedules people have make it near impossible to not to eat out. I would guess alot of companies that offer free wifi services to their customers have alot of websites blocked. As far as I'm concerned I don't need a wifi connection while I eating. If I need to connect to the internet while on the road I use my own mobile broadband card($60 per month unlimited access) and I can go on what ever site I choose. It can be payed for be cutting out 1 dinner for 4 at a chain restaurant a month. Of cousre this is just my opinion.

The yuppie douche bag clientele I've seen frequent that place alone is enough to tell me to avoid it.

No offense to those of you who stop in for a sandwich but for the most part, I've seen nothing but the typical elites Obama supporting ass wipes walk in that place to hang out day after day when I'm at the shopping center.

F'em and their bread! I'll go to D'Angelos.

+1

My town has a home-grown local bakery that crushes Panera in quality: The Bakehouse.

OTOH, I am amazed that there isn't a no guns sign at the local Panera. I fully expected one to be on the door when they opened. Not that it would matter anyway.

I was at Panera Bread today for a coffee. I had my laptop and decided to check the internet and kill some time. I was using the Panera Bread's Wi-Fi connection. Well, their "security" filter denied me acces to GunBroker, the FiringLine Forums, and EBang. The filter's warning stated firearm related sites are not allowed.[angry]

I won't be going back to Panera Bread anytime soon. I don't need a coffee chain telling me what websites I can look at. Anyone else have the same experience?

With all due respect, are you serious? Of course they are anti-gun! Didn't the overwhelming stench of Petrulli oil raise your suspicion? Perhaps the number of customers wearing hemp clothing should have raised a flag? The mid-eighties Volvos in the parking lot? Obama stickers on all the bumpers? Surely you noticed some of this? For future reference, all natural=Hippie=liberal.[rofl]

I think you are all overlooking the most important factor here, which is panera bread's food is shit tier. Hell, I'll take subway over panera bread.

Hahaha...

My best buddy, Kicker96FS, works at a large commercial bakery that his family owns.

I'm gonna call his cousin on Monday, and make a similar suggestion. . . .

haha

I also just sent them a Nasty-Gram. I've never been to one of their stores, but now have no interest in doing so... ever.....

I just sent them a message regarding my experience and that I will be finding a new place to eat/have coffee if their policy is in fact anti-firearms. I left my email, and am waiting their response. (if the corporate blows are allowed to respond......)

Why are they blocking access to any sites at all? There's no need for them to do that.

It's their firewall, they can filter what they want. Maybe they don't want creepy NAMBLA dudes browsing pedo-porn over their morning coffee? Can't say I blame them.

Again, it's more likely that the business owner (who has far better things to do than manage content filtering lists) simply asked some IT consultant to "install a filter as quickly (cheaply) as possible." If you want to get pissed, get pissed at SonicWall or BlueCoat or whoever they bought the filtering software from.....

Also, keep in mind that Panera is a franchise business. I'm sure some franchise owners are antigun DB's but that doesn't mean that they all are.

But whatever. Eat where you want. I don't particularly like the food there myself.

Dear Panera,

Recently, I found myself craving one of your fine cafe menu selections, specifically, the Napa Almond Chicken Salad. I find the all-natural pepper-mustard chicken, fresh celery, seedless grapes, almonds and special dressing creates is a most amazing culinary creation. After succumbing to my weakness for your mouth-watering salad, I found myself in one of your clean and family friendly locations. While enjoying my light lunch, I decided to use your free wireless internet, another excellent service you provide your patrons. However, it was at this very moment which I had a dreadful revelation. I tell you kind sir/ma’am; I nearly sprayed a fine mist of my Iced Chai Tea Latte from the shear surprise of how restrictive your internet policy is! I do not understand why a fine, family establishment such as Panera Bread would want to restrict my ability to bid on a .50 BMG semi-automatic sniper rifle via GunBroker.com? There is no finer an afternoon that I could devise, than one which allows me to enjoy an exotic, fresh salad as I research high capacity handguns or order hollow-tip ammunition! It is therefore with much reserve that I inform you that my love of your exquisite salads and sesame semolina bread is not enough reason to cast aside my love of the boomstick.

A customer, no longer.

Ok, all of you who have never personally installed nanny-ware on a large corporate system (5000 users+) need to be quiet please.

It's been a while, but I was actually on the team that shopped, purchased and installed such a system for a very large company with well over 10,000 users. These things come out of the box pre-configured for the most part. And in may places whatever the default settings are stay there. Most sysadmins will actually remove sites from the ban list if they do anything. They generally HATE putting filters on anything but porn (bandwidth + obvious problems) and don't usually ask for more work and more stifling of the web.

So no, it's not at all unlikely that no one ever gave the matter any thought, especially if it's a franchise.

It is unlikely the individual Panera gave it a thought, however, I would expect a national chain with hundreds of outlets to have made a decision what to filter - especially when customers complain about said policies.

Tufts Medical Center's facilities are the same. My dad is in the hospital ICU and I can't access any of my usual gun related sites, including retail sites such as Four Seasons Firearms and MidwayUSA. They haven't filtered this forum yet though.
