Looking to get a OWB holster for my Sig P229 soon. Wont get a ton of use since I carry IWB to conceal usually but I also dont want to buy a cheap o one thats no good. What do you guys use? Any suggestions?

Leather or kydex?
Not really sure. I prefer having some retention if I'm going to carry owb. I lie leather way more than kydex but i cant stand having a leater strap to keep my gun in the holster. So i guess isrally a leather owb hokster with good retention but no strap to lash the gun in. If those even exist haha

You don't need a retention strap on a leather OWB leather holster. Any quality leather holster by any reputable maker will have models that will provide enough tension to retain the pistol and many models feature a retention screw which allow you to adjust the tension on the holster. I have quality leather holsters by DeSantis, El Paso Saddlery that have this feature. You have to remember that in the days before kydex people used open top holsters and they retained the holster just fine. Some of us even remember a time when virtually all holsters were made of leather. It wasn't so long ago, really [wink]

A trick the old timers used to do with their holsters: oil their guns really well, stick their guns in the holster, wet the holster down, put the holster in the oven @200 degrees F (perfectly safe as far as not harming the metallurgy of the gun and make sure the gun is not loaded BTW) leather dried around the gun and viola perfect fit. Today's modern leather: DeSantis, Galco etc uses cast replicas of the guns and subjects thousands of pounds of pressure to ensure a snug fit. El Paso Saddlery hand bones the leather around the model the traditional way, either way you don't have to worry about a retention strap.

In the long run kydex will last longer, but leather if properly cared for will provide decades of service and there is something about leather that kydex doesn't have. I use both.

I own two owb holsters. I have a Tagua pancake, leather,no thimbbreak but great retention. It works really well for my shield and that's usually how I carry it.

i also have an alien gear owb for my sr45. It doesn't work so well. The leather collapses when you unholster. To get the retention you need il you have to tighten your belt incomfrtably tight. However, I haven't changed any of the spacers and an sr45 is pretty heavy.

the moral of the story is that the Tagua is really good and I recommend it.

I picked up a Tagua for my Sig P938 so I could hip carry (cause the plastic holster that comes with it is complete garbage). However the Tagua is super stiff.

I rigged up a way to break it in a little:

I can "wear it" without actually wearing it [laugh]. I'll probably keep it like this for a day or so. That should hopefully loosen it enough that I can actually wear it to complete the break in process.

I also ordered a Tagua for my P320 since apparently hardly anyone makes holsters for it and those that do are more than I want to spend ($80+). I would have preferred a Don Hume Agent 721 (I have one for my SR9 and for the price it is hard to beat) but they don't sell direct anymore and all the resellers have 3 month+ wait times it seems.

I have a couple of Garrett Industries Silent Thunder IWB holsters. If their OWB holsters are like their IWB holsters then you have a winner! The leather lined Kydex along with adjustable retention & cant is second to none. Great people to deal with as well. I'll be getting an OWB for my 3" S&W 686 soon.

I want to order one but find their options a bit confusing. I have a Safariland kydex for my Sig but hate the sound of the kydex scratching it. :)

If you are considering leather take a look at Mitch Rosen out of Manchester, NH. I have purchased a few of their products and can say that they are absolutely top quality holsters. I purchased the 5JR for my P239. Also if you are going to make the investment go for the "full detail" line which is higher quality. You will not have to worry about retention either. It is almost impossible to get the firearm in and out of the holster when it first arrives but breaks in perfectly. I would also get a belt custom fit for the holster as well while you are at it. You won't regret the purchase.
