After reading this letter I am just thankful that murderous thugs are not to blame for the killing of our children. It is those "illegal guns". Those guns probably drive vicious SUV's!!! (oops...sorry about the SUV comment...I do not want to take away from their personal responsibility in killing the children)

Amnesty Program Press Release

In this day and time our city is in disarray. The murder rate continues to rise to an alarming scale. Youth In Crisis Ministry Inc is trying to bridge the gaps throughout the city with different businesses and organizations. Our city has experienced so much loss of lives among juveniles in our city streets and neighborhoods.

Our children are dying senselessly due to illegal guns that plague our neighborhoods. Youth In Crisis Ministry Inc, will be holding a Press Release on March 2, 2006 at 7:00pm at The Mount Calvary Baptist Church in the South End to address the Violence and the Amnesty Program to get guns off our streets.

If any businesses, organizations or any grass roots agencies want to be a part of this movement, we would like you to send a representative to stand with Youth In Crisis Ministry Inc, at the Press Release.

Respectfully,
Reverend Shaun O. Harrison Sr.

Maybe I'm just being a little narrow-minded and parochial in my thinking, so could somebody please help me out here? This guy calls himself "Reverend", so I assume that he's affiliated with some religious organization. I doubt it's the Baptist church mentioned in the EMail. The problem is, while I'm not a Baptist, I'm confident that they, like other Christian churches, don't attribute the presence of evil in the world to the physical proximity to some particular inanimate object that's deemed to be "bad". To the best of my knowledge, the same holds for Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism.

I guess my question is simply this: What is the group for which Shaun is (or claims to be) a "Reverend"? I have a problem taking seriously any religious or philosophical system that attributes the all world's problems to "bad juju" or contact with some object that's considered "taboo".

He is from a liberal version of Christianity. Such Christianity rejects the Bible (which would contradict their philosophy). Their message is reduced to a socialistic, anti-capitalistic, and anti-American rant.

I am a Baptist preacher...I do not think I have too much in common with these people.

OK, it all makes sense now. A religion whose primary message is that "religion is the opiate of the people." IOW, they're all stoned out of their skulls 24-7-365 as a religious obligation. Sort of makes the Rastafarians look like a bunch of short hitters.

It is en vouge to deny the personal nature of evil. acknowlaging it requires taking personal responsibility for it.

I'm with massnee.

I absolutely agree. It's insane how there is no personal responsibility for ones actions.
It's not the fault of the parents, the communities, the schools or <ahem> the church. No- they should not have to forcefully involve themselves in children's lives to make them avoid being on the street or learn how to be good people.

It's the fault of an inanimate object. Because if it were a person's fault then we would have to admit that we are also at fault for not helping them to avoid the situation in the first place.

As I said- what a bunch of crap. [frown]
