A homeowner in the Warren area was awakened up by an intruder breaking into his home late Sunday night.

Just after 11:30 Sunday night the homeowner--an off-duty federal law enforcement officer with the Federal Protective Service in Portland--called 9-1-1 saying someone had been in his house and that he had fired his gun at the intruder.

The Federal Protective Service (FPS) is a federal law enforcement agency that provides integrated security and law enforcement services to federally owned and leased buildings, facilities, properties and other assets.

"The guy probably broke in not realizing who's house it was." said neighbor Mike Loeks. "Doing what he does he probably has a lot of firearms in there. I'm glad they picked the house where somebody was able to defend themselves rather than turning out badly for innocent people". said Loeks.

The incident is being treated as an officer-involved shooting and the Columbia County Major Crimes team is investigating the incident.....

The officer woke Sunday night around 11:30 to sounds of a break-in at his sprawling house on Millard Road, according to initial reports by the Columbia County Sheriff's Office and the Columbia County Major Crimes Team.

The homeowner called 9-1-1 to say someone had broken into his home and he had fired his gun at the intruder.

The off-duty law enforcement officer, who works with the Federal Protective Service, fired shots from his house with a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson service pistol, said Sheriff Dickerson. He said he then chased the intruder and yelled that he was an officer before returning to his wife and small children.

Police closed off about four square miles around the home, and despite the use of K-9 search dogs from the Portland Police Bureau, were unable to locate the suspect.

"Oregon law says that if you're going to use deadly force, you have to reasonably believe it's your only option," said Dickerson.....
