I've been researching my options for mounting optics on my AK build and have decided that i like the side mounts that place the optics over the receiver rather then forward on the rifle over the handguard. There doesn't seem to be a lot of them on the market though and wondered what the NESrs have on their AKs and why. Pics appreciated.

PK-23 on a BP-02? side rail optic mount.

Optic: it's good until recoil jostles the battery loose. Then a good wack on the side of it with a magazine gets it going again. Hopefully a shim works to fix the battery spring, or something.

Mount: see below

Overall: see below

edit: actually, it might not be a BP-02 mount. I have no clue what it's called after looking at Kalinka's website.

2nd edit: well, thanks to Ray, I fixed the mount so it's tight to the receiver now. So tight that it doesn't even move. It should work better, but the jury is still out.

The Saiga factory mounts work great and can still be fund on some auction sites. I got this one:

from E Bay for cheap money.

I also have a few BP-01 low profile mounts that Kalinka sells. They're pretty good and lock up solid once you adjust them.

you scored on that one.

Does the BP-01 have adjustments to tighten it to the receiver rail? I really, really need a mount that does this. The BP-02 isn't cutting it.

Mount: sucks. ass. Had to bend coat hanger wire around the end to keep it from sliding on the rail. This lost zero every time it moved down the rail (often). So now, it holds after rigging it. Perhaps I will drill, thread, and mount a screw on that side of the rail so I can manually tighten it to the receiver rail.

Did you get that mount from Eastwave? I noticed they advertise their mounts for fitting SVD and AK side rails. The PKA I got from them has an SVD mount but they added a screw in the rear of the base to lock up against the end of the side rail. It doesn't work and keeps moving forward.

I'll be getting one of these eventually: http://www.kalinkaoptics.com/pk-a-military-fast-acquisition-red-dot-rifle-scope-ak-version.html

Its shown with the correct AK mount and should mount tight like the other bases I have in that style do.

I've got a cheap optic on my AR that goes out or gets dim during firing. Would a battery shim help? A wad of aluminum foil?
