Opinion please: 357 magnum or sig

It’s pretty simple: the SIG was developed to closely replicate the ballistics of a .357 mag. So, terminal performance is close.
Now, it’s for self defense. Your job when defending your loved ones and yourself is to make your surroundings an extremely hostile work environment for the bad guy (or guys). To accomplish this, you’ll need to use every tool at your disposal, which means capacity is king, and reloading speed rules. Which one of your choices does a better job at those?

Those are all the same weight - that's not much choice at all. You get a far wider range with the Mag.

they are only the same weight because I picked them to be the same weight so they would be the same weight so they have roughly the same POI. there is roughly the same weight range as 9.

So yeah .357M has a wider range of ammo compared to almost any Handgun cartridge, especially if you throw in .38sp but there is no reason some can’t find a 357S load that suits them.

I am an easier target to hit. That’s not a wise crack, but a skinny guy is a smaller target. Good points though. Thanks.
You also make an excellent point. Perhaps it may be of some comfort that a bullet has to penetrate further in you do to damage than in a skinny guy? Lol.

I have a Glock 32 in .357 Sig. I also have a drop in barrel for .40 cal (uses same mags and recoil spring) and a drop in barrel in 9mm (uses Glock 19 mags and spring). I like the fact that I can shoot 3 different calibers out of the same gun with minimal changes.

YMMV

If I was living in a free state (as the OP is) I would definitely stick with 9mm as my EDC. The mag capacity increase over .357 SIG, .40 S&W and 10mm would be preferable to the extra muzzle energy, particularly given the performance of modern self defense rounds. Since I don’t live in a free state and was making the choice the OP proposes, I would go with a 4 in .357 mag. I have 2 10mm, 2 .357 sig, 3 .40 S&W and 2 .357 mag. Of all of these the 4 in. GP100 Match Champion is by far my preferred gun for total practicality. Small enough to CCW. Big enough to be easy to shoot. Long enough barrel to be able to get some velocity out of .357 mag (2 in. snubbies just give you a huge fireball). Able to shoot anything from a soft .38 spc to a hot .357 mag. You can use it for everything from plinking to target practice to selfdefense to hunting deer size game. If I could have only one gun, this would probably be it.

it will take them longer to ban revolvers. get the semi-auto now and pick up the .357 magnum later. NH is doing good things for 2A but I wouldn't take a chance.

Personally, ... I'd never carry a revolver as a primary weapon.
Some world-class (inadvertent?) metaphors in that advice.

Semis have more capacity and are much faster to reload. ...
I reload, so cost isn't a significant factor differentiating between the two.
You're in a gunfight with a wheelgun guy,
and you both run dry at the same time.

You start pulling the lever on a one-armed bandit,
while your opponent is frantically working a nutcracker.
[rofl]

My GP100 is significantly easier to shoot well than my G31. The steel frame soaks up the recoil.
Whatever you do,
don't lubricate with Froglube.

The recoil will compress the pores in the metal,
and the 'lube will squirt out and make a mess of everything.
[rofl]

Sorry about that.

My mind is a raging torrent,
flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall
of creative alternatives
.

Can you get a drop in .357 Sig barrel for a .40 cal? Say for a Glock 22? I know you can do drop a 9mm into a .40 but you can't drop a .40 into a 9mm... kinda like .38 Sp vs .357 mag

Misinformation... In my .357 Sig SD ammo can right now is Underwood 124 HP, hornady 125gr flex tip, hornady 125xtp, golden saber 124gr, goldot 124gr, Sig vcrown 125gr minuteman Montana gold, Corbon etc.

Also if I wanted range ammo I could buy 1k rounds @ TSUSA right now for less than .357M, if you can even find it.
I love .357M have two revolvers and a lever gun, but the ammo argument isn’t true anymore.
We looked at Ruger GP100 for me and SP for her. We ended up purchasing a Glock 19 and a Glock 26, both Gen4, at a gun show out of state for cash. Both were NIB, unfired, with 8 factory mags each. Guy rented a table and selling off his collection after he and his wife lost their jobs because of the pandemic. We do not have much interest in handguns, but could not resist this bargain. Even better, no record of ownership with MA. We use them for home defense only. 9mm Luger is pretty much a universal caliber.

probably a more reasonable approach than mine. However after watching a couple hours of his YouTube videos one night mod-Covid... idk for me there seems to be a lot of better options for advice out there.

Just like wikipedia, it isn't my first choice, but I'm not going to disregard a source which aggregates data.

I'm not a gun porn fan, so I have no clue what the youtube videos say.

Probably not the brightest thing to post on a forum that is actively monitored by the AG’s office (among others).

I’d have to disagree that getting a 3” bbl in 357 mag has you loosing some on ballistic and ergonomics. I have revolvers with 2”, 3”, 4” and 6” bbls and hands down my S&W 686+ with a 3” bbl is my most well balanced revolver out of them. Accurate and easy to handle.

I’m going to take a couple to the range chrono them to see how much you really lose with 3” bbl over a 4” bbl.

I'd be interested hearing your results - the Ballistics By the Inch group tested 357 Mag, but it was out of test barrels. They did some work with barrel gap as well, but I'm curious to see what you get.

Who gives a shit! If we have to shoot a home invader in this liberal state, especially a "protected class" criminal, we will almost certainly be charged, regardless. Better a live defendant than dead victim. I am from Illinois. We had the first total civilian handgun bans in US history. Most people ignored them. Survive first. Worry about laws later.

I’m not saying not to do it, I’m saying you ought to think about posting it on an open forum. And yes, you’ll likely get charged in a self defense situation but you may get out of that and there’s coverage you can buy for that.

Won’t help you w gun charges which will make you a PP for life.

Lol you read his article I watched his YouTube video same difference my man.

only difference is I think he does a sub par job aggregating his data and forming opinions off the data he aggregates.

but would not be averse to trying one.
DING,DING,DING. You win the prize today! You know the difference between averse and adverse. So few people do. You are a 1/2%er. 👏👏👏

Not that he seems to give a chit, but he could have deleted his post if you hadn't quoted it. Maybe a PM would have been better. Just sayin'🤷‍♂️ Your advise is spot on, however.[rockon]

Just like my S&W 40Compact, swapping barrels is easy

I believe you can't go up in caliber, only down. You can't drop a .40 into a nine.

Yea you can. I have a G22 and have a Lone Wolf 357 Sig barrel for it. 357 Sig will feed out of the G22 40 mags.

cool, thanks! Looks like I’m going to be getting a Lone Wolf in .357 to match the 9mm one I have for my G22. And no issues?
