OPEN CARRY NH

Time for a break in the Derek and Jim show!!!

I long for the "good old days".

Case in point, does anybody remember the courtroom scene in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance"?

The prosecutor pointed to Jimmy Stewart and said something like this;
"He then pulled his concealed pistol out of his pocket, like a common criminal!!!"

There once was a time when only the criminals concealed their firearms. Honest men wore them openly.

Personally, I would prefer to open carry. If you chose to open carry, fine, just be prepared to defend gun as well as yourself. When you choose to open carry, you give up the tactical edge, A.K.A., the element of surprise. On the flip side, criminals are lazy by nature. They want prey. They do not want a fight. So, by open carrying, you are giving up the element of surprise, but also putting would be thugs on notice. 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other.

As Cross-X says, criminals practice to take away guns from police officers. I have seen this first hand.

Police officers are "trained" to retain their firearms. I think most of this training is laughable. They showed us how to keep the guns in the holster, but little else. No follow up, strikes, kicks etc. Just 2 hands on the gun, twist at the hips to shake off the attacker. If there is more than one, you are screwed unless you can break away, draw and fire effectively. When I attempted to try some of my own "improvising", a Dept. suck up went running to the instructor crying about how I didn't do it right. Sorry, I should have knocked you out, not down.

As far as Dave Ridley is concerned, I applaud him for exercising his rights. His methods though, I wonder if some of his encounters are "accidentally on purpose".

Open carry is a recognized right in NH. It should be exercised by more people, more often. Desensitize them towards guns as they are many other things.

This is an interesting thread.

It does seem that those who do not have the right to open carry often question the right of those who do have that right.

Anyway, I open carry all the time. It's summertime and if I'm in shorts and a t-shirt and need to go somewhere it's easier to just open carry. For the record, I live in Derry and have never had a problem. Some people have looked but no one seemed to get all hot and bothered, including a Derry cop in a sandwich shop last week.

Hear, hear Weebles! Good for you! [grin]

I'm hoping the greaser will internalize your attitude after he's been in NH for a while and the socialism begins to fade away... [wink]

I've lived in a free state a hell of a lot longer than you have. [thinking]

I've lost the option to draw and shoot from the holster at my local NH gun club (along with everyone else at that club), as some people there were very insistent that the 2nd Amendement be practiced ONLY in a manner that they considered, in their highly certified, approved and qualified opinions, as the RIGHT way to exercise this right.

So when people say what I don't agree with, I disagree and defend their right to speak (even if I would otherwise tell them to shut up).

Likewise, when people exercise their 2nd A rights in a manner that I wouldn't, as long as they are safe (not breaking the big rules), I support them as well. If they open-carry without a thumb-break holster and haven't taken retention/disarm courses, I just keep my distance.

United we stand, divided we fall - I think this is especially true for the 2nd A.

Big Daddy 45acp,
+1
Key word "Desensitize,"something MA is not accustomed to.
According to the Blue Blood Ma Liberals, if you hide it than it is no longer there.[wink]

...

I think I've said it before, but I vaguely remember that it was the law that you HAD TO carry with some part (pistol butt) exposed, or you'd be in trouble for hiding it. This is in MA maybe in the late 60's or early 70's. Can I get a second?

What, are we supposed to be patting this guy on the back or something?

First off, wearing a t-shirt that says "Free...(enter name of person here)" while open carrying is pretty retarded.

Secondly, he's on the phone the whole time, which is pretty disrespectful.

Third, he's just being a dick for reasons of principle. Yes, he has a right to open carry, yes he's only required to provide certain info, but it's just a common courtesy to oblige (within reason of course) and shows cooperation and would have ended the confrontation without all the fanfare.

I love how the guy who was totally uninvolved likened being stopped by the cops because you have a gun on your hip to being treated "like we're slaves"...riiiiiight. I wonder what response a black guy open carrying with a "Free Mumia" t-shirt on would have gotten...

Yeah, he may be on our side as far as the gun issue, but that doesn't mean we should support every idiot nutjob that would rather prove a point than use some common sense.

Not submitting to a police state is now "being a dick"?

Since I am at the local library and not inclined to pull up the youtube video, could someone tell me if this is the one where some Ma**h*** (tm) called the Salem Police on someone carrying outside of CompUSA?

I disagree Derek. I was Army, and we used Fighting Positions.

Now, I don't know what kind of holes the Navy uses...

In the Navy we only sang songs like the Village People, stole strawberries out of the Ward Room, and flew F-14's like in Top Gun. I 'm sure people here have seen the movies.

There are no need for holes in "The Navy." [wink]

My wife is retired Navy Reserve (12 years active) and I have to crap on the Navy whenever Possible!

The best was when my Dad wanted and E-tool and asked if I had any laying around. My wife looked at us and asked "What's an E-tool?".

We then explained what it was, the concepts of bivouacs, road marches, defensive perimeters etc. She then got that Kelly Bundy look and said "Well, we slept in a tent once in Beach Masters, but mostly we just drank coffee!"

I agree! Far too often it's these types of headstrong activists that can easily give the rest of the good, honets gun folks a bad image. Doing something intentioanlly with knowlegde it's likely to cause some sort of confrontation is just plain ignornat in my opinion. I have zero respect for this type of behavior. Just like most activists, they believe thier casue and stance is 100% correct and absolute regardless. Common courtesy and respect take a place too but this person forgot that.

Attitudes like this would have kept blacks riding on the back of the bus and drinking from their own drinking fountains.

I find this discussion very interesting. Personally I think open carry is a GREAT idea and should be used by as many people as possible where legal. Where it isn't legal I think it ought to be legal as I see it being our Constitutional right. I also think that because we don't exercise this right people are sensitive to us exercising our rights. If more people did it open carry wouldn't be a big deal. Why do you think people call the cops when they see this? They don't realize it is legal!

Unless you are in a very high crime area I can't see where open carry would be a detriment to your safety. Heck, even in a high crime area I would think it would cause you not to become the target of a mugging or anything else.

But then, I'm only half Ma**h***. I grew up in Maine where the boys would hunt before school and leave their rifles in the truck while they were at school and nobody cared as long as they got to school on time and didn't stink. And the only acceptable excuse during hunting season to miss a day was because you bagged a big buck that morning and had to dress it out.

(Mis)Spent a few years of my youth in the Pacific Northwest. The local hardware store did not give a rat's ass for the Fed gun laws. ON Fridays, Dad used to give me a $20 to pick up shells for the weekend hunt. All the local shop wanted to see was your Hunter Safety card.
11 years old and buying a box of .308 and 12 gauge shells.

The first day of deer season was considered a State Holiday. If for some reason you showed up to school, they thought you came from a broken home!

Hold on - open carry is legal in NH - plain and simple. The police should know better than to stop, detain and question someone for simply having a handgun visible. It's outrageous!

Yes, he was rude and disrespectful to the officer, but sometimes uncomfortable things have to be said. Maybe if more MA citizens had stood up and been a little more vocal and disrespectful, then you wouldn't have had your gun rights taken away.

I didn't see thw hole thing yet but that guy who waved his hand in front of the cop that was standing behind the guy carrying is luckyt to not have lost some blood IMO. If that camera wasn't there what do you think the odds are that the cop would have dropped him to the ground?

I'm surprised at the restraint of that officer; without a camera he would have probably taken him to the ground and arrested him for disorderly conduct (etc.).

I would more believe that these guys were trying to get open carry repealed.

When the police stop using their prudence to assess, maybe he can wear a burka and a bandoleer next time.
I believe it's totally within his rights.
