Oklahoma Takes a Stand on Illegal Aliens

Oklahoma's Governor Brad Henry has signed a sweeping immigration Reform bill: House Bill 1804, that its sponsor believes will go a long way in dealing with the illegal alien problem in the state.

House Bill 1804 was passed by overwhelming majorities in both the House and Senate of the Oklahoma Legislature. The measure's sponsor, State Representative Randy Terrill, says the bill has four main topical areas: it deals with identity theft; it terminates public assistance benefits to illegal; it empowers state and local police to enforce federal immigration laws; and it punishes employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens.

Oklahoma is no longer "O.K." for illegal aliens, Terrill observes. "When you put everything together in context," he contends, "the bottom line is illegal aliens will not come here if there are no jobs waiting for them, they will not stay here if there is no government subsidy, and they certainly won't stay here if they know that if they ever encounter our state and local law enforcement officers, they will be physically detained until they're deported. And that's exactly what House Bill 1804 does."

The Oklahoma legislator is pleased the bill he sponsored into law was signed by Governor Henry and believes it will go a long way to curb the illegal immigration problem in the state. "I would remind people that states are separate sovereigns in our federal system," Terrill points out. "Anyone who doesn't understand that needs to go back and take an American federal government class in college," he says.

As a result of that sovereignty, the Oklahoma lawmaker insists, "We have as much right - in fact, I would argue, a responsibility - to protect our taxpayers against that sort of egregious waste, fraud and abuse as the federal government should have a responsibility to protect that international border, but doesn't do that."

Terrill says as long as the federal government refuses to do its job of protecting the international borders of the United States, states like Oklahoma must take action to deal with the problem that is costing taxpayers in the state $200 billion a year in public benefits, law enforcement costs, and other resources.

Congratulations Oklahoma!!!!

This should be used as a model for every state in the union. Sadly, those who have already become "sanctuary states" will never pass such legislation.

I move that states who would not pass such legislation should be prohibited from receiving federal funding of any kind.

Wow now THATS a governer! I love it.

amazing.

i think Teddy's big red head would explode if it ever passed in MA. Not that there is any danger of that.

That's only because he would lose his maid, butler, kitchen staff, and most importantly the Cuban barkeep that mixes his drinks.

Absolutely!! Any state the encourages/promotes/aids breaking of federal laws, or allows its cities to do so, should be stripped of federal funding!! Brilliant!!

I'm sure there's some larger states rights issue that would rise out of this, but I agree with the sentiment.

So we want the federal government to eliminate any federal funding to states that don't step in and do something about the federal government not doing it's job in the first place? I've got a better idea; why doesn't the federal government just do it's own damn job.

If the feds did their job, the legislation would be totally
unnecessary or redundant. If they're not going to their job,
maybe we should just shut down USBP and ICE. They seem to be
adept at giving their own people a hard time, anyways.

1: +1, the Feds should be cleaning up the mess they created (or should I say allowed to fester).

2: "Sanctuary cites" suck, but...

3: So does federal blackmail.

Oklahoma's governer is Brad Henry; the quote you're referring to is from State Representative Randy Terrill, who sponsored the bill.

And yes, I'd vote for him for President just because he "gets it".

+1

That actually has a chance of working.

Several years ago, we repealed the seat belt law by petition initiative and a binding referendum at the general election. The D.O.T. threatened to cut the highway dollars unless the law was put back on the books. Sure enough, the state legislature re-passed the law, and even overrode a veto to make sure that money stream kept coming in.

Anybody have the original link for this article?

Weren't there a few cities or towns which took various measures to help fight illegal immigration? Anybody know which ones, or where, or what they did? Any links?

I think if nothing else, the local police would like to do something but their options are limited. Maybe they should hold illegals and then drop them off at the State House or in Hyannisport or something like that.

CNN did a story on this the other night. Illegals are flocking out of Tulsa. They estimates around 25,000 illegals have fled the state.
