A robbery turned deadly Friday evening at a Youngstown family business.

A Belmont Avenue fish place, popular on Friday's during Lent, was the target of a would-be robber, but a veteran off-duty policeman inside the store tried to stop it and bullets were fired, resulting in the suspect's shooting death. The confrontation happened at the counter of Galaxy Seafood on Belmont Avenue during the Friday dinner rush about 6 p.m.

Police said a man came to the register, pointed a revolver-type weapon and asked for money.

"I believe at this point he didn't know there was an officer inside." said Youngstown police Capt. Rod Foley.....

Police Chief Jimmy Hughes defended Officer Mike Walker, a 25-year police veteran, Monday, saying Walker acted in accordance with police training when he shot and killed Warren V. Wright, 32, 5151 Longangate, Friday night.

"You have to take into account the worst-case scenario," Hughes said. "You don't shoot to wound - it's deadly force. That's what it is and that's what we train for. His intent should have been to stop the individual's actions and that's the only way to do that. The officer believed he was going to take someone's life."

Witnesses told officers that Wright, who Hughes said frequented the restaurant every week, walked into the restaurant and pointed a gun at the cashier.

Walker, who was working a security detail and was toward the back of the restaurant, about 15 feet away from Wright, ordered him to drop the weapon.....
