Went to the club today put 10 rounds through my model 649 snubbie and the cylinder would not open. Brought it home took it apart, while taking the rubber grips off I pried them to far apart and broke them, was able to get the spent cases out but can't figure out what is causing the problem of the cylinder latch. Off to S&W for new grips and repair. Suck day for me, first day in 30 years that I ever had an issue with a S&W revolver of any model.

Check to make sure that the ejector rod didnt' loosen up and back off. I've seen that happen with J frames before. I had a Model 60 that use to do that all the time. I think that the ejector rod tightens in the opposite direction (counter clockwise) than a standard screw (clockwise).

a drop of blue locktite will resolve the ejector rod issue it that is what it turns out to be

Maybe the ejector rod walked loose a little? Try to turn it counterclockwise to tighten.
Sorry guys that was the first thing I checked for, after taking the side plate off i had to put a small screwdriver into the cylinder release latch and pry it forward to release the cylinder. I don't like messing with internals, I'll let the pro's handle it. thanks for the advice.
