Night vision group

I'm fascinated with NV.

10 years ago a set would cost $20,000.00.

Today that set is $2,000.00.

Today a better set is $20,000.00 with better technology.

In 10 years that set would be $2,000.00.

I'm afraid to get into this game due to the depreciation.

Who is the demographic for NV? Do these people just like to walk around in the dark?

My setup is finally coming together, ~2500 FOM with 34.7 SNR Elbit WP PVS-14 plus a bump helmet, I have passive aiming but not active yet, that is the last piece of the puzzle. I also have cheap thermal. Really, truly game changers. I will be moving back to NC at the end of January it looks like, so sadly can't join any in-person group, but I can defintiely do a virtual group. I would love to see what everyone is doing for training/drills and gear setups.

Star gazing with NV is the craziest thing. You see 1000x more things in the sky than you would otherwise. I could sit there for hours watching satellites or meteor showers passing through.

Also, once you view the world through NV then you'll understand how much of a force multiplier it is. Not having it means you're at a serious disadvantage especially in this day and age where NV and thermals are relatively affordable and accessible to the civilian world.
If nothing else, buying a (cheaper) set to stargaze is still completely worth it

Just mount the coffee cans on your helmet and wire the image to an Apple Vision Pro 😆

Yeah that's standard stuff where I work. Every new kid engineer comes in with his coffee cans.
A few years back one brainiac was working on thru-the- wall radar.
He imported some hippies from AZ to build an Adobe wall for a DoD demonstration.
Because it was as close to what the Sandpeople build.

back in October, the view of that comet was striking, even in the light polluted 'burbs. Was up at HSC for some night larp and I spent more time looking at that then anything else...

I drove my car with them for the first time recently. Brother in law was in the passenger seat and unprepared. He said it was one of the scariest things he’s experienced in a while.
Cover all screens. Even things that look like they don't emit, emit IR light. It will make it a lot easier. Used to have cardboard cutouts for dashboard, tape for radio and other stuff.

Not that I'd admit to having such knowledge.

Those are some great specs. Where'd you get it and how much was it? What are you thinking for a LAM?

JRH enterprises. I paid for the higher spec tube but it was on sale so got it for 3200 out the door IIRC. It is their SLH/mid grade tube but I couldn't tell the difference between it and my buddy's L3 unfilmed PVS-14. His might be better in lower light though. I am getting a holosun HS321R, I'm selling a gun and have some CC rewards so I'm going to pull the trigger soon I think. I have a holosun AEMS that's decent for passive aiming but apparently active is (much) better.

I also went with the JRH higher spec tube (but paid less = because I bought it before prices started going up).

He has great gear at reasonable pricing, fast shipping times and good warrantees.

@NH_Realtor has a LE321G that he's probably going to upgrade away from.

Is the helmet monocular disorienting at all? I imagine having one eye with vision and one into darkness would be tough but maybe not?

Most infantryman during GWOT did all their night patrols/raids with monoculars.

It’s a little weird when you take the NODs off, because you have one eye that is acclimated to darkness and one eye that is not. But it’s not disorienting when you have it on. There is no depth perception (there isn’t any with binos either), but you get used to that through training.

Any budget options for a helmet mounted single tube, that doesn’t suck?
these are OK, not super great but better than wish.com digital night vision.

Photonis Auto Gated Green Phosphor Night Vision Monoculars

~1700 FOM is what you get from chinese gen II units, but these are (I think) Gen III US made units with better glass etc. You can get away with a crye precision night cap and counterweight vs. a bump helmet, but the helmet really is much better. Check out customnightivsion, they sometimes have surplus rhino mounts w/j-arm that work great (I have two).

This is my setup, right after I first got it. I have added a NIR compliant multicam scrim and little stalk light on one rail since then. That is a nitecore (I think?) IR/RGB visible strobe that charges from usb-c on top. With counterweight it's very comfortable. I also added gel pads to the hear pro that has a cutout to make glasses/eye pro more comfortable. Well worth the 20 bucks or whatever it was.

ETA: I watched a "lessons learned" video on youtube about gear used in Ukraine, and the USB rechargeable stuff has been very popular. I have found this to be the case as well. It's easier to have a small solar panel and battery bank that you leave charging at camp or attached to your pack than a bunch of expensive proprietary batteries on you. I also hate running down expensive disposable batteries for training (I'm a cheapskate) so YMMV.

Yeah, the strobe is this one. It's pretty nice and inexpensive. It vibrates in IR mode to let you know it's on which is handy cause a) you can't see it without NODs and b) it's on top of your head. You can feel it through the helmet when turning it on and off. It comes with several mounts, one of which is velcro for a helmet.

You gotta pay to play in this space man. It sucks, but it is true.

It does seem that this tech is someone unaffected by the current inflation. 7 or 8 years ago I got a really good filmless WP PVS14 for ~$4000. It seems you can still get a good tube for 3-4k.

Good mounts are few hundred bucks, Chinese helmet ~$100. Skip all the other crap unless you jumping out of helicopters and shit.

Still beyond my price range, unfortunately. But I would take your advice and get a less expensive helmet if I could afford it.
