This should be a great day at Harvard Sportsmen's Club. The annual Harvard Action Shooters rifle match will be going on in the morning, and we'll be doing our Appleseed thing in the afternoon. I'd highly encourage everyone to come to both.

We'll be starting at 2pm.

What is Appleseed:
Appleseed is a grass roots program popping up all over the country started by the Revolutionary War Veterans Association (www.rwva.org). The basic premise is that the health of the Second Amendment (and the country) is directly proportional to the number of active Riflemen and Riflewomen in it. Mini-Appleseed events (like this one) are basically groups getting together on their own and shooting. Full-scale Appleseed events are weekend long shoots where RWVA national instructors will travel to a location and anywhere from dozens to hundreds of shooters will come to learn from them. The program has been around for a little bit over a year now, and ~2000people have come to appleseed events so far. This year's calendar is already packed with events almost every weekend somewhere around the country.

What do we shoot:
I like to explain appleseed to other shooters as an entry level version of NRA High Power rifle -- less gear, less distance, less money, but building almost all of the same skills. It's a Junior Varsity to High Power's Varsity (living happily together) The standard course of fire is the Army Qualification Test (AQT) on scaled targets at 25 meters (simulating 100, 200, 300, 400 meter targets) in standing, sitting/kneeling and prone positions. Scoring 200 out of 250 for an "expert" Rifleman score is the basic level of proficiency we're shooting for (~4MOA, or 1" at 25 yards or 4" at 100 yards). When space, time, and skill allow we shoot long range too (Harvard has a 100yard range we will use, and a 200/300 yard range for club members only), but the bulk of practice is done at 25 meters.

What equipment do we use:
The single requirement is any safe, working rifle (bolt/semi/whatever) in any caliber (22lr to 30.06+) that'll reach 25 meters. If I were to suggest a rifle to get the most out of the program, it would be semiauto, mag-fed (10 round mags are fine) with iron sights but if you have something other than that, the program will bend for you. In addition, you will want to bring whatever you need to be comfortable in prone (mat/carpet/tarp and some elbow protection).

For this training, do we need a sling attached (as previously mentioned in other Appleseed-related threads)? I got the sling and the Uncle Mike's swivels and bases for my Ruger 10/22, but I haven't gotten around to attaching them yet. (I'm hesitant to do so... the instructions are a bit confusing and I don't want to mess up the stock. Is there a more detailed description somewhere on how to do this?)

It helps to have it attached. But if it's not, no big deal. You can learn it some other time. Your groups won't be as tight.

I'd say don't worry about messing up the 10/22 factory stock. People who buy 10/22s and change stocks practically give the factory ones away.

Prepper, I just used my handy Mark-I Eyeball to center and install the swivels about two inches behind the front part of the stock, and an inch and a half in front of the back of it. Nothing to it, really.

What's a Mark-I eyeball? So, the front one goes just behind the barrel ring, right? (That looks like about 2" from the front edge of the stock.)

Is it OK if we have to bug out early? My wife is requiring that we go see some guy who sings in Boston that evening, and it'll cost me about $200 too, which would be almost enough to buy something nice like another 10/22 or an SKS (can you detect my enthusiasm?). I'd have to leave at about 4:30pm in order to make it to Boston on time. (Oh I sure hope formal dress or business casual isn't required! Argh!)

Reminder: Appleseed tomorrow at the Harvard 25 yard range. 2pm. If I'm not at the 25 yard range right at 2, I'm in the rifle pits finishing up the match but I'll try to work it out so that doesn't happen.
