So, recently in the Deals and Steals forum this Baofeng deal came up and I impulsively (lol) went for it:

Now, I don't want to do any HAM type stuff but really would be interested in if it can do local Walkie/Talkie type stuff such as having a helper back up my trailer, maybe skiing, etc - legally.

Any input ?

Thanks !

Peter

Technically, no.

Realistically, yes.

The FCC has different sections with different rules. Transceivers are "accepted" for one of the sections only (I'm sure there are exceptions, but generally you get only one). For example a transceiver approved for use on Amateur frequencies cannot be used on CB, GMRS, FRS. A transceiver approved for use on CB frequencies cannot be used on Amateur, GMRS, FRS.

There are overlaps in GMRS and FRS. I don't know this for sure, but I expect if you use FRS frequencies on a GMRS radio, you need to have a GMRS license. A GMRS license does not permit you to use an Amateur transceiver on non-Amateur frequencies.

The Baofeng is accepted for use on Amateur frequencies, not the others. Usually they can be programmed with GMRS/FRS frequencies. Unless you blab about it, nobody will ever know. Legal, no. Feasible, yes.

In summary, to be fully compliant with FCC regulations, you need to have a radio accepted for use on the frequencies you're operating on, and be licensed to use those frequencies, if applicable.
