It also opens up the Members Only area and lets you post things for sale. Most important is it gives you instant street cred.

ETA: There's a sticky somewhere with directions but my thirty seconds of searching didn't find it.

The karmas are nice and winning one of those could easily offset the $21/yr. If you're into group buys you can save money there too, but I think more often than not you're saving money on something you didn't know you needed in the first place .
