Formerly Massachusetts but now MONTANA!
I've said it before. I'll say it again. With a name like Holman Jenkins, you should be a distinguished black man in a tweed suit. Leroy's gentrified uncle.

That said, these sort of "goals" are Uncle Rico. "Whaddaya bet I could throw this football over that mountain over there?" It's never going to happen. But they're gonna talk like it is right up until the point where someone else (because they'll be retired) has to fix it.

Further aside - this is why term limits suck. Imagine if everyone was kicked out of Congress after 6 or 10 or 12 years. They have no long-term downside. They'll ALL just kick the can down the road. The best you could hope for is a complete lack of progress (or regress) as you could never build enough of a consensus.
Are you talking like the old days when we had gridlock? I miss gridlock. The economy is never better then when we had gridlock because government was effectively out of the way.

All part of the Biden / Green New Deal nutbags plan.
The Green New Dealers' are just a bunch of commies trying to destroy everything (as usual):

The Communism-in-Drag Game Plan

Thomas DiLorenzo

Years ago my friend the late Murray Weidenbaum, the chairman of President Reagan’s Council of Economic Advisors, told a story of how he had a conversation with Barry Commoner, one of the founding fathers of the modern enviro-commie movement. (I believe they both taught at Washington University in St. Louis). Weidenbaum said to him (paraphrasing from memory): You guys are against oil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear power. Without energy, you cannot have a capitalist market economy.

Commoner’s response was to sit back and smile. Weidenbaum told me that he interpreted Commoner’s expression as saying “exactly right.”

So now that the enviro-commie lunatics are in full control of the federal government, they are obviously guided by the ghost of Barry Commoner (who said in his book Making Peace with the Planet that socialism would cure pollution problems, exactly the opposite of what happened in reality). Force the shut-down of major oil pipelines; deny drilling leases onshore and offshore; strangle the energy industries with even more mountains of regulation; make it financially impossible to build nuclear and other energy-generating plants; and then when energy prices skyrocket, impose a Jimmy Carter-style “windfall profits tax” on the oil companies, as Brandon has just called for, to blame them for the high prices and invoke further destruction of the energy industries. Then of course there’s the rest of the “Green New Deal,” a Soviet-style central planning scheme that is orders of magnitude more civilization-destroying than anything the Soviets ever dreamed of.

I'm sure the blackouts in the winter will be used to justify forcing building the big transmission lines from Hydro-Quebec through Vermont, Maine and NH that the locals have rejected for years...
Making your grid completely reliant on transmission from a foreign country through remote regions in unforgiving terrain with frequent major ice/snowstorms and restive off the grid populations of dissident mountain men and native Americans.... what could go wrong?

Backwoods Maine is every bit as an untamed frontier clusterf*** as Alaska and the rump end of Montana.

The Dem Greenies have blocked NG pipelines into Ma. for years and are now doubling down like CA. in trying to ban NG hookups for residential/commercial buildings. Bye, Bye Chinese food restaurants and cheap NG. The Dems want sky high energy prices because they live in a fantasy land where "clean" energy will "save" the world. Read about the EU banning nitrogen and fertilizer which will cause widespread hunger and death. Farmers in Holland and Sri Lanka are rebelling. These fanatics must be stopped at all costs.
If your society is using more energy, it is prospering and growing.

If it is using less energy, it is declining and collapsing.

It really is that simple. Energy is true currency of the world, not the dollar. The dollar has just historically been redeemable for energy.

Just to be clear.
That last pipeline that got shot down was not to supply nat gas domestically. It was for a proposed LNG terminal that would have shipped to Europe mostly.
Just like everywhere. In AZ, we had an electric power station about 10 miles from us. Did it give AZ electricity? Nope. They were shipping it to CA (guess CA must have paid more).
Wasn't that shot down by Barney Fwank? Had that section of the Taunton River designated as some special 'Wild & Scenic' waterway.

I wonder what would happen if all of the utilities providers conveniently "ran out" of fuel oil, etc. for those elites. Or gas stations made you pre-pay inside, and looked at your bumpersticker before allowing you to pump gas. (Yeah, utilities would get smacked down by .gov, but private gas stations could send a message.

When I was a kid, I thought nuclear would be a great option. Recently I read an article by an economist that said the plants do not use the electricity that they produce. It must be piped back in. His point was that in the case of civil collapse, the plants could be in danger of meltdowns, since without power switches, control rods, etc. couldn't be controlled. Just heard about this in Ukraine, when Russian shelling cut off the electric supply to one of the power stations. Seems stupid. You'd think someone by now would have enabled plants to return some of that power generated to keep operating in cases of emergency.

Sweating my nuts off in SouthWest Florida!
Stop shutting down MA power plants then.
Kind of my point.

Some Vermont power companies have long term deals with Hydro-Quebec to supply bulk power. H-Q already provides about 10% of the power used in New England through those deals and open market sales.

The rest of Vermont has rejected expanding the lines, on the basis that the power isn't needed in Vermont but is to provide for Mass, CT and RI. Possibly Long Island if the lines under LI Sound ever get built.

The Northern Pass project in NH was for the same purpose- the company tried to route it thru a few of the commercially tax base poor towns for the stations to convert the power from the DC H-Q uses for long distance transmission to the AC used in the local grid. Rejected since it wasn't a benefit for locals.

Gov Mills tried to push the line thru Central Maine for the same purpose and got the same result.

Let me be clear. I was against this powerline from the start because not only was Maine getting porked hard with no benefits except a 54 mile scar but the fact remains if built it was also going to be the corridor for a major windmill project.

Also. As much as I despise Mills she didn’t start it but she carried the torch for it.
Paul LePage was first to approve it and all of it was done with an illegal process as was proven in court that is still under appeal til April 23.
I’ll just hold my nose when I vote tomorrow for PL because I can’t stand the Austin Powers lookalike.

Western Nuclear reactors are designed to shut down and operate w/o electrical power. The control rod's emergency function (SCRAM) is provided by pressurized gas using Normally open solenoid valves. Loss of power opens the valves and the gas drives the rods into place. The residual heat/steam from the rector is used to drive cooling pumps in a negative feedback cycle until the reactor will not melt down due to residual heat. They also have twin diesel generators, each of which can provide full emergency power. The pumps and diesels are tested regularly, like every week. Then they have a battery back up system in case the diesels fail. Of course, if the plant is hit by artillery (or a tsunami), then all bets are off.

The "Green" Revolution will doom Billions of people around the world to death by starvation, fossil fuels have done more than anything to improve the lives of Earth's humans. These clowns have no clue what they are doing and are nothing more than brainwashed Moonies chanting their slogans. Just look up what our cities were like before the horseless carriage, horses were the primary means of transportation which meant they shit and pissed wherever they wanted. Cities were filthy dens of disease and autos were clean energy back then. Without fossil fuels the world will see mass starvation, Millions dying from exposure to the cold, elements, blackouts in major cities and mass riots. If these Greenies were serious, they would shut off all their electric appliances and live off the grid. Ma. has more trees and green spaces now than it did 200 yrs ago. Why is that Greenies? Because we're not cutting down trees and clearing land for wood to burn and build with.
Clear cutting portions of forest and letting them regrow actually helps certain species thrive. Namely, Upland game birds such as grouse and woodcock. The Wampanoag’s burned woods and brush to clear fields for crops.

The greenies are definitely just a bunch of phucking morons. To me the real indicator of that isn't that they want everybody dead, because thst doesn't necessarily mean they're stupid... it just means they're evil. The stupid test comes in when you look at what they've done in places like Africa. Decades and decades of feeding them and vaccinating them and curing all the funky diseases has brought Africa to the point where they're having a massive population explosion. Now all of a sudden it's OMG there's too many people we have to figure out how to kill everybody off!!. Africa had a high birth / high death equilibrium of a sort going on and the same types of people who are now greenies went in and phucked that all up.

All the same people who sang Feed The World! at Live Aid back in 1985 or whenever it was, are mire than likely greenies now and want everybody dead. Maybe they should have kept their traps shut , left well enough alone - and we wouldn't have this problem to begin with.

I live in the middle of it. It’s long term planing not Internet high speed satisfaction right here, right now push of the mouse.

THESE ASSHOLS HAVE WATCHED TREES GROW. Right?
Moose, deer, eagles and all sorts of wildlife are in these cuts and they all move with what they need as the cut matures and gets cleared.

Don't know if it's been mentioned on this thread yet (tl/dr), but Groton's power company posted a pdf stating blackouts will be here and their customers should make contingencies for heat and temp power sources ahead of the winter.

That town is quite close to me. Good to know, thanks. And it's refreshing to get talked to like an adult in something like this, not the dumbed-down PSAs like NYC had.

I grew up having a real appreciation for nature and wildlife. Grew up in the country, and hate urban sprawl and the like. But at this point, after ordering heating oil, I'd squeeze the oil out of a baby whale with my own hands if I could burn it in my furnace. And the electrician is here right now installing my transfer switch for my generator, so we don't freeze to death during these rolling blackouts that are probably caused by Al Gore.

Also getting genny transfer switch installed. I have TWO, both dual fuel, a ~5kw and 2kw, plus about 20 gallons of gas and two 25lb propane bottles to run my cook stove and heater as well. Going to expand that in the next few days. Sh*% got real, real quick.

Just be aware generators burn through propane quick if you have a high load.

Folks here in Florida had the big 500 gallon tanks to run their 20kw whole house gensets and they emptied the tanks in just over a week of running after Ian. Of course they were running AC at full bore, pool pumps, all appliances just like they were hooked up to the grid, not using their heads to conserve. The guy who owns the house next to me (where his elderly folks live) came by after a few days to grab the gas generator he had here, because he ran emptied the propane tank at his house.

Does that mean that a dual fuel generator will burn through propane at a faster rate than when using it with gas?

I was told that mine on propane would supply about 80% of power compared to when it was running on gas. So, have gas as primary and a couple of propane tanks as backup.
But, in neither case would I be trying to run the house in 'normal' mode....

Folks who were running the 6500 watt generators in my neighborhood were easily using 5 gallons of gas a day- running a bit over half the day. A 20 pound propane tank (standard gas grill size) is around 4.5 gallons of propane.

A 6500 watt genset isn't running a whole house AC, which normally uses 240V. A 6500 genset could run an oil or propane forced hot air or forced hot water furnace- those use electric for ignition and circulation. It wouldn't get your well pump going nor would it work for an electric water heater.
