Did a quick search but couldn't find a thread on this; figured it be good to start one for anyone with the same question.

Looking for a list of gunsmiths in the New England area. Have a couple of small things I need done and figured it would be better to ask who people have had good (or bad) experiences with, rather than just close my eyes and pick a random name from online.

Where are you located?? There are a number of very good smiths and maybe someone can steer you to one that is local.

K L Hooton Gunsmithing in Monson has done right by me the couple of times I've used him. He works out of a shop attached to his garage but I've been happy with him.

With gunsmiths, there's two general kinds. First are guys who are willing to do a little bit of everything. Second are guys who are specialists.

The guys who are generalists mostly rely on local work, so that depends on where you live.

The guys who are specialists become well-known in certain communities, like say Dave Santurri, who specializes in the 1911. He does other work, but his fame comes from his 1911 work. Same with Greg Derr, or Cole's in Maine, or Gunplumber in Arizona. Each has a specialty. You get the picture.

New sights what ever type of sight and cost to install shouldn't be more than a couple hundred bucks if Greg provides the sights, refinish depends on what finish you want, hard chrome, cerrakote etc.. I would think $500 would cover what you want done perhaps a bit less. That's assuming you want everything done at once.

I bought this gun cheap from a widow. It was in the box that must have been stored under a very minor leak. It has a rust stain on the side and minor wear from sliding in the box I guess.
It’s old. The engraving is very light and small on the sides. I don’t want to loose that detail.

The easiest thing looks like machining some slanted cuts into the muzzle area of the slide.
Not matter what I need better sights on it.

IF the gun didn’t have the blemish on the side I wouldn’t think of touching it in anyway.
