So the Old Ball and Chain bought new car. Big screen on dash...built in GPS...back up cam...bluetooth ( I guess she asked the salesman...What's Bluetooth?) etc. etc. etc. To say she is somewhat technologically handicapped would be a massive massive understatement. I asked her how was the tunes, and she told me she couldn't figure how to run the radio.

My question to the assembled wisdom of marriage and relationship experts here on NES, would it be a good move to put on the country channel, turn it up just a little, and then show her how to run the stereo...in a week or two?

I would claim ignorance and recommend that she asks one of her friends, or the salesman how to operate the new gizmos. Otherwise, you will be continually be asked "how does that work again". She'll probably even offer to write the instructions down, but that won't work, she'll still ask you. Ask me how I know.

She might enjoy W. Buffet tunes about getting hammered and laid. Go for the hardcore gangsta rap channel instead.

My x bought a car with al the bells and whistles, being the jerk I can be most days I grabbed the spare key fob that she threw in a drawer, On the mornings when I was home I'd have unlimited fun as I locked her doors as she tried to open them and watch the panic that ensued as she unlock, I lock then stop for a minute and then unlock , can't understand why I'm divorced.

Aren't we supposed to ask for pics before giving advice?

... Of the CAR of course!

Quirk Ford hired a couple of teens to come in on the weekend to teach the old folk how to use the technology

I can tell you what not to do... give her the owners manual and tell her to read it.

It has never worked in this house... and there is always something interesting that the car does buried in the pages that she will find out about 2 years after she gets the car

So full disclosure, I’m not married.

That being said, she’s your wife, show her everything so she can enjoy it and not get frustrated.

I have always been happy about new tech. My wife not so much. She gets really intimidated and anxious about it. The first time she was in my truck and I took a phone call using blutooth, she was amazed. My new truck has Apple play, and I can talk to text. She sent me a text on night as I was driving home, and knows how much I hate texting and driving. When I replied, she was quick to give me grief. She didn't believe me when I texted back, I am not texting, I am talking. "Suuure you are"

Does she have an iphone? If so just use Carplay, if the vehicle has a touch screen it'll be easy for her to figure out.

If she leans right just slap on NPR and be done with it. The constant barrage of identity politics and anti-gun propaganda will drive her mad

I love CarPlay but not all cars have it. I know that GMs do but Toyotas and Infiniti don’t (based on two people close to me who just bought new ones and we tried to figure it out). Not even sure of Fords have it. Toyota/Infiniti have some proprietary version of a smartphone app but it costs a few hundred bucks to install plus a subscription fee. They all have Bluetooth capabilities but CarPlay is way better, IMO

Thailand? That's interesting cause friends took me to Hooters in Shanghai, and the girls were flat chested and bitchy looking. I guess the whole service thing hasn't reached China yet.

That salesman failed. When I sold cars we taught the customer in detail how to operate the gee-whiz stuff including phone and radio, driver's assistance features, seat controls, and perhaps most important, the gas filler door. It added about 30 minutes to the delivery process. The manufacturer sent the customer a survey asking if we did all these things, and if we hadn't done them or got poor marks, it cost us $$ personally.

Pretty sure standard nes advice would be, bang her friend, shit in the trunk and throw the remote starter on the roof. Or something along those lines

You should now be aware that there is a large difference between Bangkok and Shanghai.

As a millennial (barely, but I think I still count at 31), I have a hard time comprehending that people like this exist.

As a 29yr old millennial I can’t assure you that we do exist! Other than email and text I can’t do squat with my laptop or phone, I still don’t know what half of the smart features in my truck do and there’s a lot of them (2017 Denali Sierra)

As a Boomer I can assure you that none of that stuff, including the phone in any form, is necessary for a meaningful and successful existence.

Unfortunately when you shut off a newer car and turn it on, the radio is turned down to a normal level. No more leaving the radio at an annoying level.

My wife is better than me at figuring out stuff on the iPhone, smart TV’s, things like that. I’m the mechanically inclined one. She fixes my phone, I fix her car. It’s a good relationship. ;)
