This happened to me last night (or I should say early this morning) and I must say it unnerved me a bit....

Just to set the stage of where I was - I'm working as a guard in an apartment complex in Lowell, near the Tweksbury line (so that means it's not in the "urban" jungle). I was doing my rounds at 1AM ish and as I was passing by the pool area (which is surrounded on one side by woods and a street on the other side), I hear this sound. It made me stop dead in my tracks and look in the direction it came from. It's hard to describe the sound, but it was kind of like a crow call - in other words - one sylable. It was high pitched and loud and more in the soprano range. I didn't hear a growl, nor did it end in a snarling type sound. Now...Ed thought it might be a wiercat (sp?) as he said he's heard people explain it as I just did, but he's not sure. Has anyone heard a cat like that, or if not, what could it have been and is it something I should make sure not to approach? [lol] It definately was NOT a cat or a dog.

When I tell you it gave me a chill, I'm serious. I've been in the woods and in some remote places before, but I've never heard anything like this.

Never heard anything like that. Kinda makes me think of a moose or elk groan. Ever hear those?

Yeah - I've heard those...this was too high in the octave range for that I think.

Might have been a Fox. When a fox gets started they almost sound like a child wailing away. Only more primal. (if that makes any sense)

I never even heard of fisher cats until I moved to Massachusetts. That's the first picture I've seen of one.
They're so cute I want to snuggle and kiss and love them!

Yeah till they rip you appart! They are vicious little creatures, and will take any advantage to follow you home and kill your pets off!

Adam, you beat me to that one!

I always get a kick out of city folks that think bears are friendly and cuddly. Don't get between a sow and her cubs. You will lose.

Well can I cuddle and snuggle and kiss one before it rips my pets to shreds? [lol]

I have no doubt that any wild animal would gladly kill me rather than let me snuggle it, but it's so fun to contemplate.
I mean, look at Roy Horn. He thought he knew that tiger. But it's still a wild animal. [/i]

I can tell I was tired... I meant a fisher cat. :D I don't know what it was, but it definately caused a shiver down my back. The thing that made me even more uneasy last night was the fact that all the cats were gone. The previous two nights, there's been 4 or 5 cats (house cat types) hanging around outside of the complexes - last night I didn't see one until about 4 this morning. I was wondering if they were all either hiding, or had been "dinner".
