I want to buy my first rifle (besides my 10/22). I have my eye on a Hungarian AK47 at my local gun dealer. It's used but looks like new, he's asking $450. The flash suppressor has been cut in half, he says it has to be that way for MA compliance. I am also interested in the Saiga group buy...I think they are new and they are asking $299, not including taxes and fees. This will probably be my last gun purchase in a long time. Any suggestions?

? Any picture of this "half flash suppressor"? This sounds... odd...

without visual representation or further description, it's hard to give you advice on whether or not you should go for it.

One of these?

An actual AK for $450 in MA seems like a decent deal. I probably would have bought it back when I was looking. The best I was able to find were $599 WASR-10's. I do not know if those are the ones with the single-stack mags or not, that's something that you should check out. If it looks like it's in good shape, and will take full capacity magazines, then I would probably buy it.

The current Saiga group buy is actually $289, and it is a great deal. I got one last week and did the conversion on Friday evening. I've shot a couple of magazines through it, and I definitely like it. You will have more than $450 into it by the time you convert it to look like an AK, though.

I would be more leaning twards a SKS, thats just me. With out seeing the the hugarian variant you are looking at vs the saiga sporter,,,,,,,I would lean twards the saiga its all new and as money and will provide you can build it into a AK style if you desire. If you want the the "AK" look dont rush there are many out there and prices seem to be dropping a tad.

This if you're looking for an "AK" but if you're just looking for a rifle, you can do a pistol grip conversion on the Saiga for about $65 provided you can do some rudimentary woodworking and have an appropriate scrap of wood for the stock. I did my conversion for $94. That included a $50 trigger, $23 grip, and shipping.

If you are in western Mass, I'd be happy to help you with the stock. It may not be pretty, but it'll fit and do the job.

Thanks Dingbat, I may take you up on that. Right now, I am just looking for a rifle, definitely not hung up on getting a specific look or caliber. I just want something affordable, reliable, and fun to shoot. I think I will get in on the next Saiga group-buy. I have a feeling that once I get one, I will want to learn how to do conversions with it.

I think that for the money the Saiga is a no-brainer if you are looking for a cheap AK type rifle. Genuine Saiga rifle for around 315 out the door and it can be converted for around 150 complete if you buy a kit.

By comparison, the Arsenal version of the Saiga AK retails for about 900 in MA.

Thanks, I just PM'd the guy running the Saiga group-buy. Very excited!!
