The tables were turned on two robbery suspects, when an eldery man took out a gun and sent one of the criminals to the hospital.

Albert Atkinson, 77, shot at two men that Pitt County deputies said broke into his home early Wednesday morning.

"He's a quiet, older gentleman and a deacon," neighbor Martina Purvis said. "There's no way they could've suspected he would fight back."

Pitt County deputies around 1:20 a.m. responded to a call about a home invasion on the 200-block at River Road Estates north of Greenville. Four people were home when reports say that two men -- one with a weapon -- kicked down their door and entered.

That's when Atkinson managed to get to his gun in another room and confronted the suspects.....

If two masked gunmen kicked in your front door, you might not think to fight back. But deputies say Albert Atkinson did just that- he confronted and shot one of the suspects.

"With a bandana on his face, gun pointed at my head, and I hollered, I said I ain't got no money, don't shoot me, I ain't got no money. I ain't got nothin!" 77-yr-old Albert Atkinson says it happened at 1:30 in the morning. He was in the bathroom, his son and two friends were down the hall in the living room when two men barged through the front door. "And while he was gone to check on his partner, I got up. I knew I had my gun in the closet."

Atkinson grabbed his 38 caliber revolver from the drawer and when he turned around, "The gunman was standing right here at the door."

Atkinson knocked the man's hand into the air. While he was struggling to get the gun away from the burglar, two shots went through the ceiling; Atkinson never flinched.....
