Navy tests new Laser weapon Video

Saw this too... Less then $1 per shot from what I read (I'm guessing it's just powered by the ship electrical grid). It seems like they target anything combustible/explosive they see on the target ship (Guy holding an RPG? Detonate his own weapon. Outboard motor? On fire. Fuel Can on deck? On Fire).

Kinda gruesome, but I imagine it could just be pointed at the head of the ship/boats pilot as well. "What the hell?....ARGH! My eyes/face/hair burning?!?!"

Can be defeated by a shaving mirror. At least that's how it plays out in cartoons. [laugh]

Very cool, now they just need one big enough to take out aircraft and other large targets, i'm sure they're working on it.

Interesting. If it's real that is one hell of a weapons system. Or its hyperbole to keep the bad guys guessing. Come to think of it they should test it against Russian Bears that are using their top secret jamming system that takes out an Aegis Destroyers electronics.

How long does it have to point the laser at the target before it is effective? is it one second? or 30 seconds?

This thing is very real, the company and department I work for built the lasers that they use. If you guys like this you should check out the HELSTF ADAM.

Things are looking grim for Raytheon's Patriot umbrella system by the looks of this video.

I'm having a hard time getting an idea of just how powerful these lasers are. They are clearly able to detonate the HE or Fuel of a rocket, but could they also be used to, say, disable a vehicle by destroying the engine (say an outboard motor) or even be directed against the hull of a boat?

They can be very powerful, we have built some to drill into rock for what I believe was mining purposes. Some coworkers have informed me that Japan bought a 100 kilowatt laser to disassemble the Fukushima reactor. I don't see why they couldn't stop a vehicle with one. They have used them to take down drones and missles so I would assume it wouldn't be too hard to disable a car or boat.
