Ganassi closes NASCAR Xfinity team after FBI raid on sponsor

Ganassi closes NASCAR Xfinity team after FBI raid on sponsor

Chip Ganassi Racing is closing down its NASCAR Xfinity Series team on the eve of the 2019 season.

The team had already signed race-winner Ross Chastain for a full-season programme that will now not go ahead. Ganassi had won six races and finished second in last year's Xfinity owners' championship.

The news follows a recent FBI raid on the Xfinity team's main sponsor DC Solar.

"Due to a lack of sponsorship funding we will cease operation of the #42 Xfinity team in 2019," team owner Chip Ganassi said in a statement to Autosport.

"This was a difficult decision for me to make and it comes with much anguish as this is a championship calibre team and more importantly because it affects a number of good people's livelihoods.

"Running a car without proper funding is difficult to do."

A Ganassi spokesperson told Autosport that Chastain was free to drive for another NASCAR team but "is still tied to us".

The team made clear that its Cup Series programmes with Kyle Larson and Kurt Busch will not be affected.

In late December, there were multiple reports that the FBI conducted twin raids on the home of DC Solar CEO Jeff Carpoff and the company's headquarters.

Chastain had made his first start with Ganassi's Xfinity team at Darlington last year and then dominated at Las Vegas in the next round.

Ganassi's announcement comes just one day after fellow Cup team Roush Fenway Racing said it was calling off its Xfinity programme for 2019.

Roush has taken five drivers to championships at NASCAR's second level, most recently Chris Buescher in 2015, and ran two full-time entries last year.

Team president Steve Newmark told SiriusXM Radio that Roush "realised we needed to allocate all of our resources" to its Cup efforts.

"We've decided on how we're positioned we'll step out of that for a year and see how that goes and just focus all the resources, all the engineering, all the windtunnel on making sure that we perform to our expectations at the Cup level," he added.

Newmark underlined that team founder Jack Roush "has always been passionate" about the second tier so the absence could be temporary, and said there was "no doubt" sponsorship concerns had influenced the decision to pull out.

Not a good way to start the season.
If DC Solar got into legal trouble and had to pull their sponsorship, it's not something Ganassi has any control over, but without a sponsor the team is drydocked.

In other news, Kurt Busch is now #1
Jamie McMurray is out of his ride at Ganassi and Kurt takes the seat.

Some interesting rules changes too, Nascar is forcing the Cup Series cars to cut back from 750 HP to 550 HP by use of some tapered spacers on the intake.

Taking away 200 HP is going to do what???

That should help with a Sunday afternoon nap. NASCAR should think strongly about putting a fork in it.

They'll be powered by a V6 before you know it. The suck keeps getting worse by the season.

Daytona will take three laps to get up to full speed 170mph.
550Hp at the Super Speedways... which is approximately 25% more than the restrictor plate allows (410Hp) and has better throttle response. The speed will be kept in check via aerodynamics/increased down force.

The Busch series (when it was called that) ran V6's with roller cams for many years.

The new engine rule is for tracks over 1 mile in length, EXCEPT Daytona and Talladega, where they'll still run the traditional restrictor plates.

NASCAR should find some inner-city youths that have expressed a passing interest in racing and force each team with more than 1 car to give one of the rides to a minority to help increase NASCAR's dwindling minority fanbase. Then NASCAR should raise ticket prices $5.00 so they can charter some buses for each race to bus in some inner-city youths to watch the race for free and "Have a lunch on NASCAR".

So does this mean the end of the victory burn out?
Looks like the top 3 cars will have to be inspected on the spot after the race. If a burn out destroys or alters something on the car it could cost the winner the race.
So weak

Why is NASCAR doing this ?

Declining attendance year after year, boring races, sponsors bailing and this is what NASCAR is concentrating on,cheating and punishment.

Let me guess,NASCAR is still blaming low attendance on the economy and there is absolutely nothing wrong with their product. I know, maybe they can go troll the caravans coming from Mexico and get them a new superstar non-white driver and get new fans that way..Or maybe another driver without a penis to get female fans. That's the fans that will save NASCAR because they obviously dont care about redneck white boys anymore.

Pains me to say this as a fan for 30 years, but NASCAR needs to just die. It is just a shell of its former self and an embarrassment to racing of all forms.

The series is just plain boring. I remember Richard Petty and Bill Eliot lapping the field, now it is a pit and fuel mileage strategy game. Only having 3 makes of cars in the series is not good either.

I still love going to the races though.
We are looking into a new travel trailer so we can make some of the destination races this season.
I'd love to see one of the road course events in person.
It's awesome that my girl is into it as much as i am. We pick our drivers each season and make some fun bets each race.
We are hoping to be in Vegas for the race this year on her birthday.

Sounds like an awesome thing to do with your daughter . Way back when I figured my ultimate retirement would be to buy an RV and follow NASCAR all over the country. One thing for sure,no matter how boring NASCAR gets you can always count on a great weekend eating, cooking and partying in the RV area.

I’m watching the ARCA race at Daytona on FS1 and I have to say Danica could have learned a thing or two from the women racing tonight.

That wreck was pretty spectacular .
Only 3 cars made it through untouched .
Kind of crappy they eneded the race right then.
I guess if there aren't points being awarded it doesn't matter to much.

48 looked to try and side draft and missed it . He wiped out the entire field and ended up taking the checkered flag because of his mistake.
I'm going to have to watch to see how others feel about him after this .
