So up picked up this rifle. It is built on a Siamese Mauser action with a heavy bull barrel. Rifle weighs about 14 pounds chambered in 45/90. It came with about 100 rds of reloaded ammo. I am pullings all the bullets. I won't shoot someone else's reloads. Nice 350 gr soft points. Going to use Reloder 7. Should approach a .458 magnum. I will keep you guys informed. Damn!!!! Pics of the cartridge please! Are you going for light and fast or heavy and slow once you burn up those soft points?

Both. I have some 500 gr full jacketed dangerous game bullets that I want to try. Eventually some cast, but I want some really hot loads and the jacketed will be fun
Nice! I have some 535 and 550 paper patch if you want to try those hot ?
So what size Elephant can one take down with that?
I hear it’s rated for nothing larger than Amy Schumer. You just can’t trust it to penetrate that much blubber.

Cool, wish they did a better job of mounting the sight.

Dude, I am so jealous. I have been trying to find one in 45/70 and you found one in 45/90

Let me know if you want me to drop off some 530 grain cast bullets next time I am up north. Money bullet with the first two bands reduced so you can seat them pretty far out. Cast with 1:20 and a lot of love [laugh] .

Also, I tried some of the Hornady FTX or FTP (or whatever they are called - the ones with the red tip) in the 45/70 BFR. And they shoot good. I think they like hot loads, because the hotter the load the better they shot. The reloading supply store near the Reading gun range has a few boxes.

They also have a box of 405g cast from Missouri Bullet Company.

FYI.. with lead and smokeless. I dont know what happened, but I was testing some lead (not coated) bullets loaded with IMR 4198 today, and out of 40, I had 5 keyholes. I am still trying to figure out why. Maybe it was leading due to using smokeless (bore is .458 and I'm shooting .459), maybe the crimp wasn't good enough and as I shot some bullets creeped out. Maybe it was something else.
